Hey fella's I,m getting ready to start a repair job to help out a friend of mine. here's what i've got. It's a 90 f-150 with a 302. Today it threw a rod and cracked the block. He already has an 83 5.0 from a car. this motor runs good, but it is a TBI. What I'm wanting to know is can we take this 83 block and replace the 90. Will everything (heads, intake, plenum, fuel injection, etc) off the 90 bolt to this 83 block. if so does anyone know what problems (I'm sure there will be a few) we might encounter along the way.
BTW I'm doing this job strictly as a favor, don't want anyone to think i'm using their knowledge for financial gain.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Dec-01 AT 11:15 PM (EST)]Look at the dipstick location. There are several combinations of oil pans and dipsticks, so see if you have one that will work with the rear sump pan in the truck. Use all the late model stuff on the old engine, don't mix and match water pumps, serpentine pumps and fans rotate opposite from v-belt set-ups.
Also be very very careful with the flywheel you use. It's best to keep the flywheel and harmonic balancer with the engine it came from. But if you do need to change the 83 flywheel to the later model flywheel, be careful, right in that time period Ford changed the balance of their engines. Early ones where weighted about 28oz, and later were weighted 50oz. It was somewhere in 82-83 when they did this so I don't know what your swap engine would have.
