does anyone know what this is? Ive got some sort of module on the left(drivers) side of my '86 intake that is connected to a rod that runs down into the intake itself. Ive searched all my manuals: ford shop, motor, chiltons, haynes and am unable to find any info on this. Right now it is disconnected with no vacume source in sight, and I would like to know what it is to know if it should be connected or not. If it should could someone please tell me from where.thankyou
What you are seeing is your EGR valve. EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. It takes un-burned exhaust gases and recirculates them to reduce emissions and improve gas mileage. It is probably disconnected because they clog up with carbon build-up over time. It is fairly easy to change. Just pay attention when changing it because between the carb spacer and the EGR valve there will be a washer looking ring with a hole in the middle. The new EGR walve will come with a few different size rings, and a chart to determine which one your vehicle will need to use. It usually asks for the numbers on the old valve itself (either on a sticker on it or engraved/casted into it) because this number is how you look it up on the chart to determine what ring you need to use. Buy a can or two of carb cleaner and clean the carbon off the EGR/carb spacer plate, and any other carbon covered passages for the EGR. Then run some vacuum lines to your carb or intake to allow the EGR valve to function. Hope this helps..... BEN

thank you, but I know its not the egr. Its not connected to the carb in any way. There is a bracket attached to the intake that holds the module. the bracket is about half way between the carb and the valve cover almost centered front to rear on the drivers side. the module itself is no bigger than a quater around. on one side a vacume line and on the other a rod going thru the intake via a plate (two bolts.)Ive also got the ford #s-----------------E4TE 9G46A AA. THANK YOU!
Ok, you're carburated, at first I thought it might be the choke, but that would normally be found on the passenger side...It sounds a little like a cruise control...but that's bigger and once again would be physically linked to the carburator...mmmmmmm...It could be some type of switch that would connect to the EGR, opening the vacuum after the engine is warmed up. Hard telling what it was/is therefore. I would try removing it, coverying the hole where the rod went through the intake and see if there is a performance difference.
After responding to your message before, I went and looked in my Haynes manual. I also looked on my 302 in my 4x4. My 302 has a small plate on the driver side between the carb and valve cover, inline with the carb. It has 2 intake bolts holding it in place. There is no rod going through it into the intake though. It just has a hoop that appears to be a place where a throttle spring hooked for the OEM carb. I read in my Haynes manual that there is alternative types of EGR, not just carb plate EGRs. It may be an "alternative" EGR, kind of like a Chevy EGR, except a chevy EGR is in the same spot but on the passenger side. The rod going into your intake may open a valve to the heat cross-overs in your intake, kind of like a heat riser in the exhaust system. It opens when engine warms up, keeping it closed warms the engine faster. I say remove it and install a block off plate. Call your nearest Ford dealer and give them the part # you included in your response. They can tell you the part name, and you can probably figure it out from there. GOOD LUCK, hope I was some help!!!!!!

so this is what I was told it was from a reputable source. It is a alternative choke. instead of there being a thermostatic spring under the choke cover its under the plate. mine being the carburator it is however it isnt necc. thus it being disconnected to begin with. THANKS ALL!
