Smoking engine?
My truck's exhaust has started to smoke regularly last summer. Thus time for an engine overhaul yet I don't have the time or money for it. Is there any alternatives I could do for now to rid or decrease the smoke?
I put a can of that Restore-X in the oil. Good, bad? others?

The smoke is a white/grayish. I really had an episode with thick heavy smoke when I ease off the gas. I had a shop spray on some reeflex bedliner on my flatbed, which is a rubber spray-on. Some of the overspray landed on my muffler. Not much but some, even some on my fuel tank and cab corners. The rubber on the muffler sure burned up in no time. Doesn't smoke like that no more. Sure felt sorry for the truck driver creeping up to me.

Keep an eye on engine oil level, check coolant regularily and watch for oil slicks in the coolant. Also pull off your main vacuum line for the brake booster and check for brake fluid in the hose-if so, your master cyl. is leaking, and have a bad booster? Another source could be a leakey trans. modulator if its an auto-same deal, check hose for oilyness.
I had a 76 F-150 2wd, 460 auto that burned oil badly, made decent power although I had to clean the plugs every 2 weeks so it would run on all 8 cyl. I tried these weird pellets in the cylinders and ran 20w50, it slowed down the oil consumption, but seemed to need oil and gas regularily. I still remember kicking it down and 4 barreling it through an intersection to get through the light, and looked back to see some kid on a bicycle looking at me through a huge cloud of grey/black smoke that nearly covered the whole intersection...

Do this to find out if it is coolant. With the engine cold, drain a pint or so of oil from the drain pan. The coolant will collect underneath the oil. Then you will know.
