Ordered a New SD Today (V10)
This V10 not holding up like a diesel is urban legend junk!
These engines are used in many industrial applications. It's a true work horse with a good reputation from those who know...
I have a buyer for my 2004 6.0L Lariat which didnt take long. The new truck is all "dollied up" with the fluffy creature comforts. 20" rims/chrome package/torqshift/ESOF4x4/power slider/power moonroof/BSEG/reverse camera/reverse sonar/navigation system/Sirius/traction control/heated seats/tailgate step/engine block heater/memory group/tow command!!!!/upfitter switches/roof markers and all the other stuff that makes me wonder if I bought a truck or an Escalade.
I spend a ton of time in my truck running service calls - so the extra comforts will be much appreciated.
Anyhoo - I guess I am a diesel to gas convert for now. Just couldnt justify that extra $6K for 6.4L and am still skeptical of the DPF. I suspect I will miss my 6.0L when I'm towing our Jayco 30T (don't even realize it's hitched behind the 6.0L), but the other 330 days a year I will probably (hopefully) be glad I went to a gasser. It'll be a big adjustment - I'll probably find myself "huffing" diesel fumes from other trucks just for old time sake. Maybe I'll record a diesel sound track to play in my new truck so I can pretend sometimes.
It's really not a life-long commitment anyway - I might be intersted in the 2010 oil burner when it's released. Who knows. Pumped about a getting a new SD anyway. I'll post pictures when it arrives in 3 - 8 weeks (depending on which person I asked at the dealership - Fox Ford, Grand Rapids, Michigan).
I have a spreadsheet I've used to calc the relative savings/expense of diesel versus gas engines. It used to be a no-brainer for the diesels to pay out in not too many miles/years, but with the current premium on #2 over regular, it's more about preference. The fuel prices in my area are closer than in yours, and I'm surprised at the low mileage you got in your dmax, but I bet it's a pretty good mpg number for a 6.4 to compare with. The only thing in the diesel's favor still, is you get back a good chunk of that up front cost in resale.
I went with an '07 diesel just because of the uncertainty in the DPFs and new emissions in general, so I'm definately in that camp as well. I have to say that I think Ford is the only one that has implemented the whole diesel emissions package right -- I'm particularly thinking of the catalyst before the EGR to dry out that exhaust stream, which should really help with the EGR and Turbo issues Ford and GM have had (Dodge is in it's 1st year with an EGR, but they'll have the same issues too).
I do love the power of my diesel, and we're running around 21k lbs loaded, so we can use it -- but if we downsized I can certainly see the "preference" choice becoming more the issue than a $s choice...
Good luck with the new rig!
