Started yesterday on my '70 F350 for the total make over. This is my work truck.......390, 4speed...blah blah. Truck is great to work out of, but the 390 is lacking in power to pull megapounds of equipment and tools. 4 wheel drum brakes have to go also. Day before yesterday, we pulled the front end off and cut the fenders for the tilt front. Yesterday the engine and trans came out. Today we will pull the entire front suspension.
The plan.......I will be replacing the twin I beam with a straight axle, disc brakes from an '86 F350 and airbags. This will result in a lift of sorts, therefore a tilt front will be used to make engine access easier. The powerplant will be a 500 Cadillac and turbo 400. I will also be totally rewiring the truck. I will post pictures of our progress. For those of you that scoff at GM power in a Ford.....oh well. The engine is already built and ready to go. For those that can get into the spirit of the project....stay tuned.
Sounds like an interesting project. Ya, won't get any high-fives for the powerplant...but I can appreciate being different enough to use a Caddy motor!
I didn't figure that I'd get a standing ovation on the Cad, but the motor was built for another project and was already available. Besides, the Cad puts out more torque than a 460 with the Cad's 4.3 stroke............and I just don't happen to have a 460. But I am not here to debate the merits of a Cad vs. Ford, so that is that. I will post pictures as the project rolls along. This project has to move at a fairly good clip, since we are down to the work van only. It s a 74 E300 conerted to mono beam, leavf sprongs and power disc brakes, mid mounted 393 stroker and C6. I will throw in some pics of that also.
