I have a 86 ranger 2.9L with a O/D auto. Over the weekend I had to change the fly wheel. Old one pulled out the center. After I got all back together there is a rattling sound coming from the bellhousing area. Fist 10 miles it would quit and comeback. Now I have drove about a 100 miles and it wont go away. Truck pulls fine it's just I have a constent rattle. I can hear it in the cab no problem and I know everyone else can hear it to. By the looks I get in town. No trans leaks, I put the spacer back in between the motor and trans. I figured if something was rubbing it would of quit by now. Also it doesn't matter if it's in P, Drive, or R. IF I go down the road put it in N and shut the engine off it stops. Could it be the convertor? Any ideals? Thanks.
I would recheck your converter bolts! I have seen a couple of times that the converter did not seat into the center of the flywheel correctly and made it seem like the bolts where tight. After running the engine it may have come free and now the bolts are loose.
Yup. Converter bolts...or even the flywheel and flex plate bolts. I also would not run the motor any more until you do! You may have already damaged something, but you sure don't want to damage the crankshaft bolt holes!
Well I took the starter off today to check converter bolts. They are tight, but when I would turn the motor over by hand. It would make the noise. It's like a clicking noise. Doesn't matter which way the I turned over did it both ways. It was constent not hit and miss.
