Greetings, all. I don't hang out in this neck of the forums but I have some questions about my suspension. I have a 1970 F250 Camper Special with a 1969 Avion C-11 truck camper (see photos in my gallery.) The rig tends to sway going down the road. I figure I neede some additional rear springs or air bags or something and anti sway bars. Has anyone here beefed up their suspension for a heavy camper? Who makes suspension components for that vintage of truck? Any on line resources or vendors? I would like to minimize modifications to the original suspension components. Thanks-DG
If you do the airbag thing, don't forget to insulate the bags from each other - often folks run one line from the compressor that then splits into two lines for the bags, it works for hauling heavy loads in a straight line, but it does nothing for cornering as the air is free to move from side to side. To remedy this, individual solenoids can be installed, they shut off the air in and out the bags so what air is already there stays there, and not travel down the line to the other bag when you start cornering and your rig sways.
On your initial question, adding leaf springs will make the rear more stable, but it will also ride harsher, my choice would a combination of name-brand aftermarket air bags (Conti, Firestone) and solenoids, and a rear swaybar from an F350 dually with a factory tow-package.
M.L.S.C.- thanks for the info. Do you know if the rear sway bar from an F350 Dually will fit without major modification of the bar or my stock suspension? What model year should I look for? Any other suggestions?-DG
well if you have a sterling rear end I'd say it will fit easy, as its mounts clamp around the differential housing, but to tell you the truth I'm not sure how easy it will be to retrofit it. I will take pictures of my truck's setup as tis an F350 dually with the factory tow stuff, and it stays flat on ground during cornering even tho springs are soft enough for me to rock it side-to-side real good by just swinging on the running boards with my whooping 150lbs body weight What axle you got in that truck?
Photos would be nice. It's a Dana axle, can't remember the # off the top of my head. I have the data at home. As far as I know everything's stock. Take a look at my gallery. I have photos of the camper and truck. It's about the coolest rig ever.
