Do all the factory 302's have the flat head pistons? And are they all 30 over? Got this engine apart and this is baffaling me. I mean I wanted flat pistons I think but the heads don't look right. Can I put 351 heads on a 302? Are the GT40P good for these pistons? How do you tell if a head is GT40? I'll be doing alot of shopping in the pull u parts and would need to know this. Or just plain and simple which heads are good for 400hp?
With the 302 I'm guessing that the rpm's these engines get is all from the top end,is this right? If so what can I do to build the the bottom end to get 225-250hp? Is this possible?
Most of the 1976 and earlier engines with the smaller combustion chambers had dished pistons. When they went to the large combustion chambers in 77, alot of the engines had a flat top with 4 eyebrows. A factory engine should have a 4.00 inch bore, not .030 over. You can put 351w heads on a 302 with special head bolts, but there is not point with the 77 and later heads because the 302 and 351w heads where basically the same after this. I doubt you will get 400 hp out of any stock Ford head. It would require many expensive modifications. It would be cheaper to get an aftermarket aluminum head for 400hp. And yes, this hp would be developed at high rpms (not much good for a heavy truck unless the gearing is changed).
Ok that clears up alot. So now Are the large combustion chamber heads good for flat top pistons? Would I be better off getting a shallow chamber head for those pistons? Or would that defeat the purpose? And what do I need to get the stroke less to around 2.5-2.75 stroke? And how much hp is coming from the bottom end of a stocked 302?
