Anyone ever done this before.........I was thinking of buying a used RV AC unit and then cutting a hole in the top of the camper shell installing the unit and then hooking up a inverter to my battery and plugging the unit into the inverter.............anyone with any thoughts on this or how to's or things to think about........seems like a simple process to me............it's for my dogs.
Seems like a lot of trouble for the dogs (yes I do love my dogs too). Why not just open the side windows? Or if you have an inverter in the bed already, just mount a small home A/C unit inside the bed.
It can be done. The A/C's run on 120v and usually require 30 amp though. You may be able to get away with 20amp??? I would imagine the shell will have to be reinforced so it would not cave in with the weight of the A/C on there. You will have to secure the shell very well also since it will catch more wind.
I believe the biggest problem will be getting enough power from an inverter.
If you do this I would put some foam insulation on the roof and sides to cut down on run time of the A/C.
I have a 5000 watt inverter........I just wonder how much juice the AC unit would pull.......and if the alternator could keep up with the drain on the battery.....
I would only run the AC unit while traveling down the road.
Ive seen boots that connect a sliding rear window on a truck to the front window of a camper shell allowing the cool air in the cab to flow into the camper.
just get a rubber hemorrhoid seat looking donut. put it between the sliding glass of the cab and the glass of the campershell. i used this for my cap on my old f150 with the air matress in the bed. haha. good dwi preventer.. lol
The $6 buck solution is an intertube from a 26" mountain bicycle wheel. hold in place thru the open cab window and inflate. Mine creates about a 95% seal. Now if I could only convince the 95 lb dog that it's always my turn to drive......
wow, I was looking around for a while, trying to get that kind of "seal" between the shell and cab, thats sounds terrific, the intertube from a 26" mountain bicycle wheel. Im going to try it. thanks folks, you are etc etc
