Of the bumpside models, given the expertise of the members here, what are the benefits and drawbacks year to year in these trucks. I am looking for a project and wonder the best bumpside model is? Are there any stepchildren years for parts, are there any glaring technical difficulties. I had a 1970 F250 previously and loved it. Want the ease of maintainance and lack of computer technology as well as the look. Which year model do you prefer and why?
Not completely sure, but i think the 1967 is not completely the same as the rest of the bumpsides. I think the doors and some other stuff is different. Someone else might know more details.
Ya, interior stuff on '67 make it the red headed stepchild. Heater controls and door locks come to mind. Most all the basic sheetmetal will inter-change(even the doors-even though lock mechanism is different). On the '67 the "lock" is part of the door handle(lift up for open/push down for lock), then in '68-up they put lock in typical location they use today. The heater controls are push/pull *****, were '68-up are slide levers.
The only real outside differences is the grille lay out. 67-69 are all metal, with small differences, the 70-72 have plastic inserts, with small diffrerences thru the years. Though you can interchange the whole thing between years.
I like my 69, it's the little details though. I don't think any particular year is better or worse than any other within this body style, it's all really just appearance differences aside from the 67, which had a different FE (352), different dash, and different door lock and handle setup.
67 and 69 both had bright aluminum grills, 68 mostly had a painted steel grill, while 70-72 had an aluminum surround with plastic inserts- 70 had 42 holes per side, 71 had six, and 72 had four.
70 was the first year for front marker lights that stayed on with the headlights, side marker lights at the rear of the bed, and also a divider bar in the instrument cluster.
Which one you go with is really your preference- I went with a 69 because of the bright aluminum grill, engine options, and instrument cluster style.
68 had anodized aluminum grilles also. It's the steel one's that are harder to find around here. There are no OEM or aftermarket replacement for the 67-69 grilles (yet) but later models will fit. Hoods are hard to find too. I like the 68s cuz I got one. The 69 had woodgrain stickers on stuff in the cab, not my bag, but some folks dig it. The 67 is the oddball but only just.
As ive discovered recently,i just bought my 3rd 67-72,and of the 3,only one was mostly original,the other 2 had been changed dramatically.lets see,different engines,transmissions,later model axles,power steering on 4wd drive models,different transfer case,2wd Camper Special body on 4wd chassis,etc. no worries,they were mostly cheap,in fact 2 of them i nearly stole(a 1969 F350 390,a/t,front disk brakes,10 ft. utlility bed,12 ft Alaskan camper,56k miles,perfect interior,etc,owner wanted $1300,i regret selling it,didnt have parking) and i think i kinda stole this one too,its a 72 Camper special 2wd body,on what i believe to be a 73 or later 250 4wd chassis, fresh motor,FE(not sure yet which one,im thinking it might be a 390 or 428,judging by casting #'s) new dual exhaust) np 435,np205,power steering,straight body,very little rust on body,etc,got this for $1650.....BTW,the reason i believe its got a later chassis is that its got power steering and a 205 tcase. it seems as if lots of these trucks have been pieced together by previous owners,poss largely on there large production numbers and maybe also on the fact they dont seem to command the outrageous prices that 67-72 chev/gmc's do.
I have a 72 shortwheel base Sport Custom. The cab was so bad so i found a 70 Ranger cab in great shape along with all the chrome around front and rear windows,the rain drip,plus headliner. It's actually like designing your on truck with items you want on it. You have 5 or 6 trucks with same sheet metal but it's your one of a kind.
If any the 67 (mainly camper) is the stepchild....the ranger is worst if your restoring due to all the trim ect and price thereof, camper was first and last year for...
c/s badge on upper part of cowl, and only year badge had red background not black,
first and last year of the narrow trim down belt line, grill only interchange 67-69 although design of is different,
on basic models the instrument cluster was trimmed in white only on 67
67-69 back of instrument cluster was different setup along with a lot of other stuff that really groups fords 67-69 and then 70-72
Reflectors didn't come about til 68 which was side only, 69 side and rear, 70 rear with lighted side markers
68-69 campers had front side markers...none on 67!
67 only year for screwed on rear view mirror with incorporated visor anchors started getting glued on in 68 and beyond
Hood emblem one of a kind on 67, changed in 68 due to Federal safety regulations requiring the reflectors on the front and rear of the vehicle.
67 only year for lever style door handly, no push button, 68 beyond had squeeze-type release and the door lock button.
67 last year for pull **** controls
67 heck even the ashtray is different with one screw mount and no ball bearing track as in 68 and beyond and the handles are different...another item that is non interchangeable!
67 radio one of a kind non interchangeable with later models with out cutting dash, 67 as basic as can be, no push buttons and was smaller than later models wich is why you need to cut dash to put in a newer model radio.
67 e-brake is physically different appearing but does interchange, brake light switch on master cylinder pushrod arm on 67 on pedal after rubber bump stops on 67 none after ect....little differences but is a concern with restorations though because remember...you'll want original!!!

67 ignition switch used single hot stud which protruded through the push-on connector, which in turn was held on with a small nut....different after 67!
The Hood's outer skin is identical on all '67-'72 F100 thru F350 trucks. but the inner bracing is a little different on the 67s.
Is that enough supporting facts for the redheaded 67....Luckily I got a steal on my 67 c/s...original owner died I got at estate sale for $2750...78k absolutely all original and in cherry condition except rear bumper...working on finding one in junk yard to rechrome!
1967/72 sheet metal is all the same, EXCEPT for the misc internal cab structure pieces (firewall/dash = 1967 only) and the doors on 1967's.
1967 doors have different: door shells, window regulators and handles, door latches, door lock remote controls, door inside handles, vent frames and handles.
1967: the doors lock from the inside using the handle, which is pushed forward.
New Fed safety regulations for 1968 dictated all vehicles had to have DOOR LOCK *****.
So, that's the reason the doors and internal parts are different 1967 vs 1968/72.
