I have a 55 ford truck that was fitted with a 78 Merc cougar engine. I finally got her road worthy, and drove down the driveway when SPLAT! I sprung a hefty oil leak out of the drivers side rear oil pan. I went to the parts store, and jacked her up, scraped off the old gasket, installed the new one fine. Then I was tightening up the bolts to the pan (with my air ratchet) and broke one of the bolts off. My question is: will she be ok with a bolt broken, or will oil shoot out where the bolt is no longer? I know I eventually will have to fix the broken bolt.
Well, the bolt is there for a purpose and I would guess you are going to get some leaking in that area...You could possible drop the pan a little and run a bead of RTV between the good bolts and that may get you by for a little while.
You will be ok ruuning the engine with a snapped bolt. The worst thing you will have is a small dribble of fluid once in a while. The threads are closed off on the other side of the mounting surface. Personally I would be peeved enough to pull the pan and remove the broken bolt.
Yeah, I am peeved. I went and got an ez-out and tried to get the broken bolt out, but the clearance is so small that I kept getting in there at an angle. I just went ahead and tightened her up, and am hoping for the best. She is still sitting and with wiring and some fuel lines to be taken care of, I should be ok for a little while. Once I am driving it I'll probably get tired of leaving oil on the ground. Thank you for the help guys!
