Fire!!!

I just bought a 87 F-150 4X4 XLT with a 302 for a hundred dollars. Here's the scoop, the guy I bought it from was having probablems with the truck being week, so he pulled off the air tube that runs from the polution pump to the cat and it ran better. Sounds like a plugged cat? Anyway he drove it like this until some black smoke was shooting out the hood. He thought he blew it up and sold it to me. I look under the hood and I find that about 5 wires and a vacum line is melted, the exaust was going out that little whole in the cat causing the fire. This is where it sits, the truck will pop but not run believe or not. My questions are what is the wiring on the back of the engine and if I replace the wires and take off the cat will it run? Or is this a hassel and I should sell it.

Thanks for your time Mike

Have you tried to trace the wires, check fuses, seperate the wires from coming in contact with any unsheilded portion of the wire? Also if you have a vacum line burned through change it (start with the simple stuff first). These will most likely cause it to not run. But before tring to start it unplug the cat. Engines love to breath.

Either pull the old cat off or at least open the exhaust at the cat and reconnect the air tube. It sounds like you're dumping the exhaust right onto the engine and are just heating up the engine bay more. I would tend to put in a new cat and continue from there or remove the whole smog pump and associated equipment (frowned upon by some local inspectors, though)
