please help

my brother has a stock 03 auto. when you start it summer, or winter it has no power what so ever untill it warms up just alittle. I had a 7.3 and the flap in the turbo or exhaust was not opening because of the heat pipe going to the sensor on it was bad and this 6.0 acts just like it did but i dont know anything about the 6.0s ,if anybodys got any ideas id be thankfull

Any other symptoms (white or black exhaust, what is his fuel economy, hesitation or shuddering, etc)? Also, has all the maintenance been done - like filter changes? Also, has he recently had a computer "flash" to upgrade the processor strategies?

oh yeah good maintenance no other trouble once it warms up just alittle it runs like new ...also if he keeps it pluged in it runs great and doesnt do it

Sounds like injector "stiction".

Getting the latest "flash" upgrade may help. This upgrade will provide the inductive heating that keeps the oil drained off of the injector actuation mechanism after shutdown.

I have heard some folks say that you don't want to get the flash upgrade if you have an 03 since they made more power than later models (and the flash removes some of this power). Hopefully others will give their ideas and experiences on this.

Stiction definition:

There is a small spool valve in the top of the injector that controls the flow of high oil pressure fed to the intensifier piston in the fuel injector. That spool valve only moves .017", back and forth, on and off every time the injector fires. Many factors play in to how well that valve works such as, oil temp, oil quality, normal wear, ambient temp, and many others. As this valve ages it polishes itself inside the bore of the spool valve and as the spool valve slams back and forth it can set up the condition like a suction cup, hanging the valve to one side or the other. This uncommanded uncontrollable condition is called stiction. Oil that stays inside the valve on a hot engine shutdown and is allowed to cool slowly in the injector can aggravate the condition on restart, so the newest reflash cycles these spool valves for 30 seconds after shutdown to purge the oil from them.

Generally you will have rough running along w/ the sluggishness.
