My buddy has an '07 F350 xlt 4x4 with 45K or so miles. He was running between Baltimore and D.C. today and noticed that the truck was running strangely. It lacked a bit of power was making white smoke and sometimes black smoke. He described the throttle as spongy, etc. but no check engine light in fact, no idiot lights at all. He had a friend check codes and it was a p0404. I know what it stands for and I know that the 6.0's are known for EGR issues. I have read how to disconnect it, but will this fix the problem or just cover-up a symptom of another major issue?

Update, I was talking to him on the phone and misunderstood...he pulled up out front and I went out and looked. He DOES have a CEL and the guy who read the code cleared it, but it was back on. It smells really bad and idling it's mostly white smoke, if he puts it in gear and pulls any kind of load it is mostly black smoke. Did I mention it smells bad? Not like a diesel should smell. I unhooked the EGR and it didn't change a thing, still smelled bad and the same white smoke in park and mostly black smoke when in D and loaded up and lugging the motor a bit.
Sounds like EGR valve AND cooler (white smoke). Unplugging it isn't going to help on that truck. He needs to take it to the dealer and let them repair it correctly. I can get you some good contacts in Md. for recommendations to get it repaired.
I would also suggest strongly that you get them to change the oil cooler also (assuming npccpartsman is correct - which I would bet he is). A plugged oil cooler is a big problem that results in other big problems.
According to the stealership, it was just that the EGR needed to get replaced. He is going to pick it up as I type this. Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it.
I don't think an egr valve would cause white smoke. Sounds like typical procedure for a Dealership to cop out on the actual repair and instead toss a new valve in and call it good. I would suspect he is still going to have the issue.
I went with him to pick it up. It smelled better and no smoke. I was suspicious as well, so we will see in a day or so I would imagine. If it acts up again, I will update y'all.
