could someone please tell me what the ring with the piece of rubber under it on the drive shaft of a 00 F 150 4x4 ex cab 4 r 70w transmission dose? this ring is located on the front of the rear drive shaft on the piece that goes in the transfer case. I have a rumble that only occurs between 68 and 78 mph. This problem has been a mystery to me. my list goes on forever to try to remedy this any where from new tires to several sets of u joints. But just to update if you look back at my posts i had a vibration problem at these speeds. New tires solved this. But i still have the rumble.
it is a dampner for sure, but why ford uses it is beyond me. i hope some one knows or can explain it. i have the same rumble at 100kph (64mph) ive tried lots to get rid of it but nothing is working. new ujoints, greasing the slip yoke, adjusting the shaft weights. nothing works. ill try a new steady bearing next, but that only has about 10000 miles on it and it looks/feels fine. im kinda at a loss. ive threatened to have the local shop build me a new shaft.
THANK YOU beer boy, finally someone with the same problem as me, i think everone thought i was nuts! I did make some progress though after doing everything you mentioned except i bet i went through three sets of joints, we i put the last set in was when i noticed the dampner. I WD 40'd the hell out of it and that seemed to make some difference after it soaked in for a few days. So now the rumble comes and goes. So you might try this out. If it gets worse guess i'll see about a new driveshaft. good luck
im having my shaft looked at by the local driveline shop. they said about a hundred bucks to balance and straighten. ive made it clear to them that if there is any problem at all with the shaft that may re-occur that i want them to make a new one for me. i may just go with that anyway. its alot of money to have a new one made, but if it comes back then ill have wasted the money on the balance. ill post when ive gotten the work done. hopefully by next week.
cheers
