My 2002 f150 FX4, recently developed a kind of rumbling noise with vibration on deceleration,
In the cab it sounds like I have large mud tires on the back,or am driving on a mild rumble strip or have an exhaust leak, but only during deceleration, I checked the brakes, tires and exhaust all seam fine it doesnt seem to effect the transmission or motor, I have heard of possible problems with the clutches in the FX4s rear end, I and am looking for any leads to fixing this problem. Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Hi with out driving your truck can't say what your problem is.But the clutches in the limited slip rear are not the cause, if the noise is when you are not turning.
My rear-end clutches only make noise while turning. Replaced by dealer 3000 miles ago and already back to rumbling. Hope they can eventually get it right. I'm almost out of warranty.
Question to the experts as I am not one. The rearend was fine until this past winter and I used the 4x4, right afterwards, with-in a 100 miles the clutches went out. Had them replaced, used 4x4 to get up a driveway that was 1inches deep of sticky mud, upon disengaging 4x4, the clutch rumble is back and getting worse. I only engage it when stopped so it can't be that I was going to fast. Any suggestions, or is the FX4 4x4 not really supposed to be used!!!!!

The problem turned out to be, a frozen rear end U-joint. Everything works great now!!! Hope this helps someone. It would be too much of an expense for ford motor company to put grease joints in immediately. Thanks for the tries!
