Front Drive Shaft/Transfer Case Problem?
I have a 2003 Explorer.... 4wd..... and here's my story..and maybe some nice people out there can give me their two cents!
I had a tire blow out (front driver side) and I took it to a tire chain to get it replaced (it was the closest thing to where it happened and I had to get to work)
After the tire was replaced, the truck started to rumble in the front and seemed like the brake was being pressed while I was driving. I called the chain tire store and told them my truck was not doing this prior to them replacing the tire. They said it was fine because I was riding on a better tread tire and the remaining tires were worn.... (okay..maybe so?)
I drive 80 miles one way to work....the whole way there...rumbling and this 'brake applied' feeling. Worked my shift...drove the 80 miles back home...same thing.
Took truck back to store....they said that it was the Front Drive Shaft had cracked at the Transfer case.... I've asked a few people and they think it's just the ABS still locked because I was traveling a high rate of speed when my tire went out. I think the tire store chain screwed up when they replaced the tire....
Any advice would be great. Thank you so much!
I am asuming they sold you one New Tire ?
I am thinking that if it is like my 04' Explorer,,,it is prob in Auto 4x4 all the time,,,and with the one new tire,,it has a bigger circumfrance then the other tires,,triggering the computer that other wheels are slipping,,,trying to engage 4x4 the whole ride,,,My 04' Just turning a corner I can feel the the viscous(spelling ?)coupling in the transfer case trying to lock up,,,,,Just because the front tires are turning at a different speeds,,,wish they just had a Normal 2 WD setting also!
You may at the least,,need another New tire on other front wheel,,Hopefully the driveshaft is Not cracked,,,,Have them show the crack to you!!,,Good luck !
To answer your questions, 1) The tires are over three years old (They were brand new tires when I bought the car in '08) and 2) Yes, they sold me only one tire (which I thought was strange, but like I said in the first post, I was pressed for time)
The way you described your '04 sounds like what mine is doing. What you said about the auto sensoring (sp) sounds more accurate than what they said.
They failed to show me this supposed crack...which I think it was they are smoking. (lol)
I have someone else looking at my truck today...so let's hope he has more sense than the store!
Thanks again m350!! You rock
