Its time for new tires (152000 kms on the Michelins!). Also doing ball joints, swaybar bushings, shocks, and wheel alignment. Will also have a close look at front brakes, and other steering components.
There goes my savings account!!
Wow, you had me on the edge on my seat when I saw this heading....
I'm glad it`s not any major mechanical problem.
What`s the total mileage on your truck?
You did pretty well with those michelins Warren.
Since working at a tire shop Ive personally seen the advantages of buying higher quality tires, and longevity is one.
Thats not too bad for stuff to get done on your truck though, how long did your shocks last?
I have 185000 kms and everything is original. I had 33000 kms on the factory Generals when they were replaced under warranty. Did the upgrade to Michelins.
Ball joints are showing some wear. I have done the swaybar bushings once already ( you can kind of feel it in the floorboards when they get bad). Front shocks worn out, rear still okay but want the ride quality improvement. I want to tighten everything up now and it will/should last till I am done with the truck. I dont like any wear/slop in things like the front end because it just pushes the problems up the line if you know what I mean. I can feel some ride quality deterioration and all this does is loosen up things like doors, dashes, and cab structure given the miles/speeds I drive and the lovely condition of our roads.
I want to repaint the leading lower edges of my dually fenders, get some chips repaired, and get the truck polished after seeding so it looks like new again. A few dollars spent now protects the value. I always have people ask me if I am sure on the kilometers on my vehicles vs condition.
I have used Michelin LTX M/S and I have been happy with them. Excellent tire.
For price, I called around to a couple of tire shops , then asked Canadian Tire what kind of deal they could give me, as I had to special order them (Cdn. Tire doesn't handle them as one of their models). The service mgr. asked me what the best price was that I was able to get and gave me $ 2.00 off per tire, from the best price of the other dealers. Price wise, I didn't skin Cdn. Tire alive, but, still $ 8.00 in my pocket, which might buy a couple of French Vanilla Cappuchinos at the local Co-op .
I have had two sets on the old Astro and they are great.
I dont mean to knock canadian tire, but most of the time the tires they sell are lower quality tires. You can still get the brand names like michelin, goodyear, but you get the bottom end tires from them. Same as if you get tires from walmart. Now Im not gonna knock a lower end good brand name tire, but compare those to a higher quality brand name tire, and you would be amazed at the difference!
I just find really no diffrence in places to purchase tires rather then price. In th end they all give the same warranty, debris insurance, free rotation.
I got the same warranty from Kalotire that my 1969 Ford got. As did my International and 93 Ford got for tires from Wal Mart.
The cooper discoverers that I put on the front came with the write-off that I bought last winter, so they were esentially free. That works for me! Mine just rolled over208,000. Good to hear your getting all that done. These trucks sure are worth maintaining!!
hey Laredo, how do you know (besides visual inspection) that your bushings are going. Diagnostics are not my thing. Ball joints, shocks and tierod ends I've come to recognize, but not the swaybar bushings?????? Thanks
