Looking at 4" exhaust or muffler delete for my 3/99 f350 7.3psd. Does it really benefit that much between the two. Currently running diy air intake and a zperformance 6 setting chip. everything else is stock. Any info on hp increase and any milage?
go for the 4" AND muffler delete! Don't have any exact hp or mpg figures....but you can tell in the SOTP department, and your truck will love you for it!
i just have the muffler delete until i can get a turbo back ive seen a good bit of pick up and go now w/o the muffler. its not really louder but if you roll down down pass. window you can hear that beautiful flutter ha ha. i've heard that you really drop the egt's with a downpipe but since you do have chip i would do something.. any gauges?
For those running a muffler delete how much increase in in-cab noise did get? My truck is fah-reaking loud right now inside, but that's because I've got a 4" pipe dead-ended under the rear of the cab due to install problems. I'm considering sending the muff back and just getting a muff delete pipe to save some $ but I can't take the increase in cab noise.
mine is just stock pipe with a 3 inch delete pipe the in cab noise is very minimal i mean seriously i can't tell its straight it does have a little roar at about 2k but its not bad just a little guts to it. i mean seriously i wouldn't worry bout the in cab noise but if just depends on what you like and whats loud in your book

No gauges yet, haven't really been gettin on it til i getum. What gauges and readings should i be looking for.
Sorry i don't wont to get to far off subject, should i start a diff thread for that?
well most essential gauges would be pyro(egt) boost psi and trans temp as far as readings egts shouldn get over 1200 to be safe over that your runnin a risk. boost i would say just watch it some gagues are bad about fluttering at about 25 psi. trans i think 160 is ok operation but i think 200 is max on most gauges but some1 else will chime in on for shure numbers
I have only the muffler and cat delete. 3" straight pipe to behind the RR wheel. Very little noise difference in the cab or outside either. As far as performance goes I don't know how much a larger pipe will benefit you. Consider the fact that when you double a given pipe size you increase its flow capacity by a factor of four! And your up pipes on the 7.3 are only 1 1/2". Therefor the 3" exhaust pipe will carry away two times as much gas as can flow into it from two 1 1/2" up pipes.
You do need to run at least 4" turbo back to keep your EGT's in check when running a chip. I run a 4" turbo back cool dual setup from MBRP with no muffler I wish it made more noise I think it's pretty quiet in the truck, outside I have been told it sounds really good. I have a chip in mine with stock injectors , a WW, EBPV deleted, and stock IC and can hit 1200* when I'm really hammer'n on her .

My two cents
Steve
this may sound right but its not..when adding a chip or tuner..you really need to go with at least a 4" exhaust to keep the EGT's in check...more so if pulling a trailer....the exhaust is being pushed out at least 15 feet to the tail pipe compared to the 2 or 3 foot up pipes...
no change in sound level in the cab with my 5" strait pipe...that is if i keep the windows up...
Steve: 1200 F pre turbo and 900 F post turbo (downpipe, some say a 200 difference but i like it for safety's sake), boost will be around 25 psi, and trans add 80 to 100 F to the ambient air temp with 220 being the absolute highest you should ever go. Thats what ive been told on here and actually wrote it down to remember it

I ran my exhaust like that for around 1week and could not take the noise(especially towing) With no muffler or with a muffler the noise is really the same. That exhaust exiting right under your cab is The problem.
