I will be tearing into a 1995 powerstroke with a ZF5 speed tranny. The dual mass flywheel is shot, and I might replace the clutch as well.
I'm leaning toward an single piece replacement since I hear the DMFs are prone to failure. The owner wants something reliable and doesn't mind if its a little noisier. Cost will be a factor though.
If anyone else has done a swap like this, please let me know what brand or kit you went with and what the results were. I'm going to check online for potential suppliers, but if anyone here knows of a short list of sources, it would be a big help.
Many here have made the switch from DMF to SMF. There are a few sponsors above that carry everything you need. Click on the links above ie. Carolina clutch, LUK and a few others. Someone will be along soon to give you there opinions/experiences.
if you need a serviceable dual mass flywheel I can dig mine out of the scrap metal bin. I changed it when my throw out bearing went out. ValAir is the best choice
Thanks for the offer, but chances are that we will go with a solid mass flywheel. Is there any drawback that should be mentioned with such a conversion? From what I have learned the DMFs canot be resurcaced, but the Luk replacement clutches for the SMFs seem to be more expencive.
I'm leaning toward Luk's complete flywheel/clutch kit. Best price I found so far is $569.00. Anyone used this kit?
Call Dan at Valaire , he'll set ya up with a SMF . I just bought a Valaire clutch kit not yet installed waiting next for a down pipe and a free weekend to do the job.......... Seriously call Dan at Valaire , he sure does like to talk clutches........
Still looking to find the best option at the moment. I'm doing this as a favor for a contractor that our small business works with, but he isn't exactly made of money and neither is the owner of the truck (who works for him). Just looking for something that will be reliable.
powerstrokeddiesel, my understanding is that the DMFs are problematic and ford recommends replacing instead of resurfacing the flywheel. So they can be resurfaced? But since I know this one is falling apart I guess it doesn't really matter anyway.
I have had 2 dmfs in my truck.
1st one lasted 100,000 miles
2nd one 60,000
3rd clutch was a southbend con o...... lasted about 50,000
4th clutch and the one still in it is a southbend con ofe
Both of my dmf clutches caused a very hard pedal and clanking
They do seem to make it grabbier but at least the smf holds more power

I contacted valair and he can set me up with the right parts, but it would be $170 just for the shipping. I don't suppose anyone knows of a supplier in the northwest, or better yet in canada?
David, who did you talk to at Valair? Did you talk to Dan? If not, call back and talk to Dan. Tell him Cody from Death Row Diesel sent you. He'll beat any price out there, and give you a better clutch. And if you are looking for a distributor, just ask him who he has that's close to you. He's got distributors all over the US. But if you tell him I sent you, he'll probably help out on the shipping. I'm not making promises, but I'd bet a dollar or two....
I was swapping Emails with a gent by the name of Kevin, and the price of the clutch conversion was reasonable at 565.48, and rated for 400Hp, not sure if a lighter duty one exists at a lower price. However with shipping it brings the price to $735.48, which is a bit more than this guy wants to pay (and there will be canadian taxes on top of that).
David, email him back and tell him "Cody from Death Row tells me that you are Canadian too." Kevin is a very big Austrailian guy. I actually drove his dodge on the dyno last weekend. I was giving him crap about being canadian, even though clearly he wasn't. It was funny. The guys at Valair are great, believe me. Tell Kevin I sent you, after you call him Canadian...seriously do it. He'll get a kick out of it. I am positive they can do better than that on the price.
