18 HWY like i said was my baseline stock MPG for 2WD no mods. I'm happy with the MPG im getting now especially with the dam gas prices the way they are now.
I have a 99 EB 5.4 4x4. get 12mpg all in-town driving. K&N filter and new fuel filter may help. Also I'm a firm believer in changing fluids on a regular basis. check tire pressure every fill up. Just my $.02
I got about .5-1.5 mpg upgrading from stock to Delta Flow 50 series Flowmaster exhaust. Sounds like a beast compared to stock and got more mpg . I'm still wondering since the Expy is already a sort of cold air intake from the factory, if it could really benefit from a K&N cold air system.
Just checked my mpg's yesterday. 99.8% highway got me 19mpg's.
-drive at 65 (+.5)
efans (+1.5, +15hp)
underdrive pullies (+1.5, +15hp)
Royal Purple motor oil (+?, just feels good)
Airtabs vortex genertors (lowers Cd, + .5?)
Xcal II custom 87 tune (+0-.5mpgs, +30hp)
AF1 cold air intake (+?mpgs, + 15hp).
Need an exhaust
The hp estimates are just that - based on mfg's claims and SOP dyno.
The mpg's are based on calculations made at the pump.
The 19mpg is (I think) still with winter gas. When they switch over to summer gas in a few weeks, the mpgs should go up by abut 2-3.
Not only did the mods give better mpgs and hp, they also really, really improve the driving experience. Very quick off the line, great passing accelleration (the stock tune is very piggish for passing).
- Don't drive with a lead foot. Accelerate gently from stops, don't try to maintain full speed up hills.
I agree. I just drove my 05 Expy KR 4x4 5.4 80 miles on two lane highway with towns every 5-15 miles, into the wind, and got 19.9 mpg. I reset my in-dash mpg and took it as easy as I could (about 57 mph) just to see what it could do. Accelerate as light as possible and let off of the gas as early as possible when coming to a slower speed zone so that you don't have to use the brakes much. When going down a hill into an incline get the speed up so that you can make it to the top of the next hill without having to use the gas too much. I was doing about 61-63 at the bottom of hills and about 54-56 by the time I got to the tops. (Depends on the size of hills, if any, are in your area)
I've made amazing headway by just over inflating my tires by 5 psi, going easy in town and never exceeding 55 mph on the highway. Every time I check, I'm doing better and better. The last tank was about 50/50 city and highway and I got 23 mpg. The tank was prob. even more city than highway. My son has the 5.4 and he's going to try it too.
I'm going to be installing a flowmaster muffler this week. I would like to find something other then flowmaster though. I might call to see if dynomaxx has something that will fit.
Looks like there is nothing available for the '03 that fixes the crimp where it goes from 2 into 1. That crimp is another thing I'm having corrected at the exhaust shop.
Change your driving habits. Its HARD to do but with practice it will produce the desired results.
Anticipate traffic conditions and COAST in NEUTAL as much as you can.
Coast when going down hill.
Turn your engine off at LONG red lights.
Envision a raw egg between your foot and the gas pedal, don't break the egg.
I have had my 197 Expedition since new. I have watched the mileage closely since the vehicle was new. - I have been told I am OCD too.
I have a few things to suggest / note.
Buy a Scan Guage (I or II). If you are serious about monitoring your MPG, this is the best thing you can buy. I have had one of these for about 3 years and it is amazing how accurate they are and surprising to watch how small changes in driving style, weather, or small mechanical changes can change mileage.
Tire are important. I have 2 sets of tires & wheels (All Terrain were for winter when I lived in Germany, and a highway rib for summer). I haven't used the All terrain since 2000 since I now live in Savannah GA, and decided to install them to get some use. What a change that made in MPG. I know my MPG dropped about 2 mpg average as compared to the Michelin Cross Terrains ( the all terrains are Goodyear Wrangler ATS, yes both factory sized).
The K&N intake kit with filter does work in my experience, but you have to CLEAN the filter. Some people buy them and don't clean them until they look like hell. Follow the instructions for cleaning and oiling closely or you will have residual oil on the MAF sensor, etc.
You have to determine of you are SERIOUS about saving fuel and improving your MPG. Installing a scan guage, programmer, or K&N filter is not some magic kit that is going to make your Full sized SUV efficient. You are going to have to make changes to your driving style and life style. Accept that 55-60mph is going to get you to your destination at nearly the same time as driving 75mph.
I am sure you are interested in numbers. Before I removed my Highway ribbed tires, I could routinely see 19-20mpg when driving at 59mph (with cruise control), windows down-no a/c in I-95. With the All Terrain tires I can't seem to get much better than 16mpg.
When I took my 04 EB in for the 60,000 service, they cleaned the injectors and i have noticed a 2 to 3 MPG difference to the better. Right now, according to the indash info center, i am getting 15.7 MPG in the city. When I have been on the highway, i get 20.2.
