I have a '97 F250 Crew that has a premium sound system. Went to install a new stereo - used Scosche harnesses - the standard FD106 and also read I need a converter, no. FAI-3 because of the "premium" system.
My first attempt was to wire it up without the FAI unit above - got power, but no sound.
So I pulled out the FAI and I wired it up as a premium/jbl/bose system - eight wires into this converter and eight wires out. Still no sound.
There's no external amp/crossovers being used - should I try wiring it with a common ground? Everything I'm reading says this FAI unit should make everything work fine thru factory system.
I do not have a diagram for a 97, but I do for a 96, and the premium sound system that year did have an external amplifier. Hooking up the stereo without the adapter may have damaged the new stereo or the old premium amplifier. Not sure about that happening, but keep that in mind. What you can do is run new wire for all the factory speakers, and bypass the Ford amplifier. This is what I would do if I wanted all the benefits of the new stereo's sound, and have the option to run more power.
