I think I'll put another exhaust system on my truck I had to cut it upwhen I changd the frame & suspension now it want fit back in. What is a good muffler that will allow me to hear music or have a conversation in the cab and sound pretty good when crusing. I had generic in now which sounds pretty OK and are quiet in the cab. I'm thinking about magnaflow or flowmaster, any sugestions?
First, a quiet exhaust system needs to be full length. Side pipes (like I have) are loud no matter what the muffler. I run DynoMax Turbos, They are quiet enough at idle not to wake the neighbors.
Flowmasters are high performance mufflers. They have practically no restriction, are loud and sound kind of "blatty". Good choice for performance. Not quiet....more like deafening.
Magnaflow are quieter and have a very nice, albeit more mellow tone.
Stock mufflers have considerable back pressure that robs high rpm power, but will let you hear the radio. If you have a stock motor, go with stock mufflers. If you have a performance motor, why do you want to hear the radio?
Magnaflow stainless...really nice sound and quality (had on a '02 Mini Cooper)
but I am running dual Flowmaster 40's out to sidepipes on a 2-1\2" pipe with a "H" pipe and Sanderson headers....Yeah Baby! She sounds like a hotrod!!!

Randy gave a excellent explaination. This might help. I originally had Magnaflows on my truck. They were definitely quieter and far too quiet for my liking. At idle, they ranked up with my wife's Nissan, when you punched it, you would get more sound than a stock muffler. I took them off and replaced them with Flowmaster 40's and I'm not sorry I did. Flowmasters definitely give more sound both at idle, acceleration and overall. I can still hear the radilo and at highway speed I barely hear the exhaust. When you step on the pedal. You will turn heads. A key to mufflers is length. The longer the muffler, the quieter. Three chamber is also quiet. 2 chamber louder and 1 chamber you need ear plugs.
Hey Randy
I also used flowmaster 40 I love the sound I ran the tail pipes out the rear and the noise level drop to a nice rumble.I enjoyed the sound when I was at the repair shop and someone else ran it down the street, man I wished I owned that truck! Wait a minute I do,now I just need to find a set of headers that will fit.
Hey Guys thanks for the explanation and advice, after I get a front end alignment the muffler shop is next. I had plan on getting an alignment yesterday however I spent all morning with the Girls at cheerleading practice.
jaye, check around at muffler shops, often if the guys are nice, they will put different mufflers on your truck without welding them onto the pipes and let you hear the difference in sound. They you can decide which muffler works for you.
Flowmasters have a resonance problem at around 2200-2400 RPM. normal Hiway speeds.. and you can't hear yourself think.
have them on my wifes 06 Mustang GT
Magnaflow have a similar resonance problem, but its in the 1600-1800 rpm range.. I don't spend much time there..
Have them on my F150,and putting them on the 55 behind the 460.
The Flowmasters have this open can sound to them, while the Magnaflows have more of a choped echo sound.
