Hey fellas, I've got a 99 Ford f-150 XL with the 4.2L V6 and I'm dying to add a little pep to it. All I have done at this point is add the K&N Filter. I'd like to do Dual Exaust (but not too loud) but don't know if it's more for sound or for power. I've also been trying to find out some info on performance chips. I've heard mixed things about chips, whether they hurt the truck or not. I'm looking to go the cheapest way possible (aren't we all) that will give my little ford some pep. I'd also like to keep my fuel use about the same or less. Any advice on the best way to go? Can you guys help me get some info on how to shoot new life into my ford?
LAST EDITED ON 04-Feb-01 AT 07:41 PM (EST)[p]You may want to re-think the dual exhaust. A good flowing single pipe might be all you need. If you do dual it,stay with a small pipe size. Too big,and you will lose any low end power that you have. I have had a Superchip for months now,and it's great having the extra power. Hasn't hurt anything yet. Gibson makes 6 cyl.headers now,I think?
There's not much available yet,but the aftermarket is starting to get the message. You could change to a taller rear gear, too.
More speed from the same power, good luck,,,98
I have been pondering the same things. I was about to add a K&N filter but was told that they mess up the mass sensors. something to do with the fact that they are coated with a fine oil that ultimately results in worse performance than the stock filter. What has your experience with it been?
By the way, a silly but cheap "and it works" solution, believe it or not, is to wear thicker soled shoes and put the seat up a notch!! Works for us short guys anyway! Downside is it's low tech and you don't get any cool stickers...
LOL,,that's pretty funny,,,I haven't had anything like that happen(oil fouling) Of course I knew about it,so I clean my map sensor(VERY CAREFULLY)with windex and a Q-tip about once a month. I just love to tinker with my truck,I guess. Anything on these late model trucks you can do yourself, makes you feel like you've really done something,,,,98
I had a '99 XLT 4.2 and actually got in a bad accident in January, and no longer have it. But, I had a K&N filter (not the kit) and a Gibson cat-back exhaust. It was a one to two exhaust and sounded great, it also made a lot of difference. The sound wasn't unbearable when it was idling but when you got on it, it sounded great. I highly recomend the Gibson exhaust it even looks a little like the Lightening stock exhaust.

Hey OFFROAD, can i have that site? Rockin_Gohan(No Email Addresses In Posts!)...
and all that torque and hp you said it would add, is that if you were to add them all at once? or just one of them at a time on a stock application?
Now on to the topic, I have a '00 4.2 and i am really planning on doing the same thing.. here is what i am going to be doing:
1. FIPK, either K&N or AirForce 1
2. True Duals: Now i just read that you will loose to much back pressure but that isn't necessarily true and here is why. If you have the stock exhaust manifolds then you can go big pips. However if your going to get some headers then it would be a good idea not even to dual it out becuase you will loose that pressure.
3. Superchip, better shifts and inproved everything!
4. Spacer
5. Headers (not unless you go single exhaust or some 1 3/4 " pipes.
