4 Speed
I just picked up a nice two wheel drive 1980 f-100 today with a 300 six and a four speed and I am unsure as to what transmission it has. It has a synchronized first gear and the shift pattern is:
R-
1 3
2 OD
any help would be appreciated.

How strong is that transmission compared to a T-18 or NP435?

It's got a Clark 4-speed O.D.
And a comparison...
think of a T-18 as a bulldozer. It's bullet proof.
And the 4 speed O.D. as a whimpering puppy.

"Clark"? The 4 spd ods are not Clark. Tremec for Ford off the old Ford toploader pattern. OD is weak, but someone here has run one behind a 390 for some time.

Yes Tremec SROD…pretty weak and sloppy, however, I liked the OD so rebuilt mine and it’s been trouble free now for 3 years. That’s not to say I wouldn’t look at other options such as a “real” toploader if I came across one.

It's the same thing, it's a Clark designed tranny but manufactured under license by TREMEC
