gas leaks from cap

My 70 F100 with in cab tank has a new cap on it but when I fill it up, and let it sit when its warm out the gas expands and leaks out exept the according to the gauge its only 3/4 full. Has anyone else had this problem eventually the truck will be repainted and I dont want the new paint to peel like the original. Also sometime when I start it It will die as soon as i put it in gear Ive replaced the accelerator pump, It will do this multiple times I need to depend on this pickup as i am a volunteer fireman.

Are you sure that it is leaking from the cap and not the filler neck? I would bet that the neck is the culprit. Not sure just a guess.

I opened the cap the other day and the gas was all the way up to the cap it spilled all over, however the rubber gasket does look rotted and the neck will wiggle a bit. Could the neck be to long can it be replaced without changing the tank?

LMC has the replacement hose for the filler neck. It's ceap I think 7 or 8 bucks.

I would pick up the new hose and outside seal to be safe. Both can be replaced without removing the tank.

I think you could be fixed for like 20 buck plus shipping and 30 minutes worth of work and 1 beer.

Only 1 beer that seems hardly worth it.

1 beer is all it's going to take to finish the job. Plenty of time to enjoy much more beer when done. A "Strange Brew" scene come to mind with you being a Vol FD

I think this is a condition of these trucks...especially depending on the angle you park the truck at. For instance, the parking space behind my place is a slight downgrade from the alley...and we park at an angle so the front driver's side corner is "lowest" when parked...the angle is just enough such that when the tank is "full" it will dribble out all day or night until getting to about 3/4....it's just the angle of the giant pool of fuel that is the gas tank and the angle of parking mostly....and the cap cannot "seal" better or it wouldn't let air slip by and the gas go out....I've learned to watch where/how I park when the tank is over 3/4.

Ds this is an issue that goes back to the 40s & 50s on Ford trucks. When It gets warm I don't fill my truck up unless I am gonna drive out 5 or more gallons.

You need to park it drivers side high, go to a parking lot and drive the left side up on a curb. That has done the trick for my dad and me for 50 years.

I have had the same problems. First, with the gas coming out of the tank...With these old trucks not all have the vent. So, you must fill your tank slower and allow the tank to burp its self so to speak. Especially when filling your tank when the weather is hotter. The gas tends to expand in heat. So you may fill your tank and when you get home you will find gas starting to drip out. This is due to the gas fumes expanding.

Now for the second problem, it could be vapor locking. I had this problem for the first couple years I owned my pickup. As for curing this problem...there are different speculations. I just try not to drive my old pickup in such hot weather.

These are just some of my experiences. Hope they help.

1967/72 Gas caps = vented/non vented

All 1967/72 F250/350's use vented gas caps.

All 1967/69 F100's use vented gas caps.

SOME 1970/72 F100's use vented caps, some 1970/72 F100 use NON vented caps.

1970/72 F100's with evaporative emission use non vented gas caps.

Evap. emission will be found on all F100's sold new in CA (and mebbe other states, dunno).

The gas tank itself is different with a large coffee can sized hole in it for the evap/emission valve.

Sold new in CA: The DSO code on the Warranty Plate will be either 71 or 72.

I put a locking gas cap on mine and the rubber seal wore out in about a year allowing gas to spill out. I just got a non-vented cap from Pep Boys and it seals it so good I'm getting fumes inside the cab. I guess I'll look for a vented cap next and try that.

Big Bad 352 thanks you know exactly what im talking about I have no idea if it has a vent, doubt it though. However could the filler neck be to long when I fill it and it gets to the top I push up on the truck to burp it yet the gauge says its only 3/4 full. I dont have a curb to park it on but it sits at such a rake to begin with. I think ill put a new grommet and neck on anyway.

The stalling problem only happens when the motor is cold after it runs for a bit it doesnt really do it. But when im in a hurry like the other foggy morning there was a car accident I almost didnt get to the station in time to jump in the rescue truck, cuz it stalled 3 times as soon as it was put in gear.

Greasy 71 I havent seen strange brew in years what scene did that make you think of?

I had this problem and had no luck with generic caps from NAPA and Autozone. I got the right cap from Dennis Carpenters and it never leaks now.
