pet peeves

OK this is more of a rant than anything. It amazes me at some of the spelling and grammar I see used in public, or on forums and in classified ads and such. First off I am by no means an English professor, I have a basic High School education. I use slang and alternate spellings of words in some situations but lemme give some examples of what I am referring to.

1. You do not cipher (cifer) fuel from a tank. Its siphon.
2. That card game you play by yourself is not solitary. Its solitaire.
3. There is no such thing as a Warren Winch. Its Warn, and they are winches not wrenches,or witches.
4. Those things you hang on your front door at Christmas are wreaths, not reefs.
5. You do not chop a tire to keep it from rolling its chock. If you chop it it will go flat.

These are just some examples I have ran upon recently. Yes I make spelling mistakes and typo's, but the stuff I'm am referring is beyond that. If you are not sure of something LOOK IT UP, you obviously have a computer so its not that difficult, and read back over what you have written before you hit send or submit, thats how I catch most of my mistakes. This was not intended to offend anyone, and I'm sure some of y'all have other examples to add.

IMO--it's only going to get worse. What about a cashier of the younger generation. Total sale $11.32, give cashier $21.32 and when you ask for ten dollar bill back they look at you like you're from Mars. WTF

I'm starting to think kids now either don't learn spelling and grammar in school, or whatever they do learn is replaced by what they see on the internet.

Nobody knows how to use "you're" anymore...

And when my youngest brother (20 now) was in high school, some chick signed his yearbook and actually wrote "OMG" and "LOL"

*sigh*

Well come on now, you are on a Ford Trucks forum. You're not dealing with the brightest lights on the string.

Keep in mind that the current generation is the first generation that is actually dumber then the previous one. There was a study on that and given what I have seen that does present itself as a logical reason for it all.

I have been thinking that my spelling has actually gotten worse over the last few years, I'm not sure if its do to my increased participation of forums or learning a second language and that is screwing me up.

I will admit my spelling sucks but there are occasionally posts on here that look like they were done by a grade 4 student. Copy and paste your post into a word processor before hitting the "post quick reply" button. It only takes 20 more seconds and is a huge courtesy to the Internet community.

this does lean to make sense, but i agree with duffman, participation online all the time does not help anything. except my firefox is wonderful because i have somehow managed to get a spell check on it. the only thing it doesn't work on is IM. it's great!

I actually meant for this to go into the General forum not the General Diesel forum. On a side note i do think the internet has a lot to do with it. I'm OK with a few LOL's or ROTFL's but this ( IDK let me ask my BFF Mike BRB) should not be a sentence. I'm from the south so I'm gonna throw some aint's and yall's in every now and then, but I'm not gonna take a break from my solitary game and go cipher some gas from my neighbors tank so I can go to Wal-Mart's.

Amen, that's always driven me nuts! Sometimes it's in topic titles, you have to start reading the thread to even know what they're talking about! It makes it very difficult to help some people when you can't get through a paragraph.
