I have never used the scales at the truck stops but I am curious how much my truck, jeep and trailer weight. I might have time before I head out to swing by one of the truck stops near my house I was wondering what is the protocol? Do I just pull up, do I go inside first?
It depends on where you go. Here locally one of the truck stops you just pull onto the scale then go inside and pay and get your ticket, on another one you go inside and pay first and tell them how you want it weighed (total weight or by axel).
There is usually some kind of sign letting you know the protocol. Some want you to check inside before pulling on, but if they do there will be a sign saying so. Most, if the scale is empty, just pull your whole rig on and go inside. If you want other partial weights just let them know you'll be jogging around. It's pretty informal.
Also, if you don't need an official state weight sheet, let them know and it might be cheaper. One scale I've used just jots it down on a scrap paper and it costs me half as much.
Actually weighing your rig is one of the smartest things an RV'r can do. I wish more people would take the time.
I used a comercial scale once that had two ft plates to be able to weigh each individual axle. My truck and trailer weren't heavy enough per axle to get the scale to register.
Several other locations to get your truck and trailer weighed are at a gravel quarry, metal recycling location, and the county dump/transfer station.
The best way to do this is weight each wheel separately. If you want more info, PM me. It's runs about $45. Much more accurate then weighting the entire vehicle.
Thanks to all that answered. It was painless. I just wanted to get a rough idea of what my trailer and jeep weighed. The hardest part was reaching the intercom button, it was about 9 feet in the air. I went to a petro truck stop and it was 8.50. I just had to make sure the truck and trailer were on separate platforms.

So, we're all in suspense here. How much did it weigh?
