Tips for replacing Crank Sensor on 5.4L
A couple of tools that came in handy which I didn't think I would use were a Stubby 10mm Gear Wrench and a 1/4" drive ratchet w/10mm socket. The A/C compressor(which must be unbolted, but not removed competely) is held fast by 3 bolts. One bolt is easy to get to. The other two aren't that bad, but you can get them unscrewed(they won't come all the way out because they hit the frame rail before they do) and move the compressor out of the way far enough to get the crank sensor out. I used the stubby 10mm and 1/4" drive ratchet w/10mm socket during the removal and installation of the compressor. They really helped. Once you get the compressor and crank sensor unbolted you must hold the compressor up and out of the way with one hand while extracting the crank sensor with the other. I used a 1/2" drive ratchet to get the serpentine belt off of the A/C compressor pulley and didn't have to move the belt any further. You can use other tools like a 3/8" drive ratchet and sockets with the proper length extensions to get the compressor bolts in and out. Actually I just used the 3/8" drive to break the bolts loose and torque them. The remainder of the way I used the 1/4" drive and stubby gear wrench because the compressor bolts are quite long. I used a 8mm gear wrench on the crank sensor bolt. Hope this helps other people doing this swap and hope it ends the random engine kills too.
There was no oil leakage when the sensor was removed altho the sensor was oil soaked(the part the protrudes into the block). If you mean down the road it's too soon to tell since I just did the job today. The owner(woman) isn't the type to look under the vehicle for things like leaks(just add gas and go type).
I was fortunate that I had the timing chain cover off when I cleaned my sensor. There was an o-ring that I cleaned and oiled before reinstalling. The electrical connector was coated with years of grime that I cleaned internally and externally with contact cleaner and a cotton swab. Did you find any metal particles on the sensor?
No metal shavings at all even though the sensor is a magnet. I didn't notice the "O" ring until you mentioned it. I went back and looked at the old one and there it is. I should have put a little oil on it before I installed it, but I installed it at night and didn't notice it.
