351 Winsor sizes

Hello everyone,

As a long as I can remember I have always liked Fords, and I am playing around with the idea of building a 351 Winsor with Cleveland heads. I know that there probably are places I can buy one complete, and while I am sure they are well made, I would like to do it myself. Also, before I actually start tearing things apart I like to know EXACTLY what I am doing. This brings me to the point of this post, can anyone supply me with (or know of a web site) that lists all the measurements (gasket thickness, wrist pin dimensions, deck height, compression ring width, etc) of the 351 Winsor (and maybe the Cleveland)? I want to draw detailed scaled plans on a graphics board so I can see EXACTLY what the tolerances will be and what the compression ratios are.

Thanks in advance,
335C

I'll answer what you've asked;

Head gasket thickness: stock= .040" ( I've seen SVO gaskets ranging
from .039 to .042")

Wrist pin: stock: .9122", if going with after market pistons check with manufacturer (KB uses .9272" with
their performance pistons.)

Deck height: depends on year pre-71 blocks= 9.48", '71 and
later= 9.503"

I assume your referring to the thicknes of the rings,
compression: 1st and second= 5/64" (.078125"), oil: 3/16 (.1875")

Any other questions feel free to e-mail me.

CR351W,

I am drawing fullsize internal tec. drawings of a 351 W fitted with Cleveland heads (I think the term is Clevor). I need measurements such as the height from the centre of a 351W's wristpin to the top of the piston (I think it is called "Compression height"), the spacing between the compression rings and the oil ring, the height of the piston, other dimensions of piston, the distance between the centre of the crankshaft and the centre of the camshaft. I have collected the internal dimensions of the conrods ([1] Centre to centre rod length, [2] Wristpin diameter and [3] Big end diamter), however I don't have the external dimensions of the conrods to check how much block clearence there will be.

I have got a set of Cleveland heads so I can physically measure them to get that part right, however I do not even own a Winsor headbolt. Also I want to check what length push rods will be needed, because I suspect that neither Cleveland or Winsor push rods will work in this application.

Thankyou,
335C

PS My personal email is cleveland_351(No Email Addresses In Posts!).

335C;

To use 351C or 302B heads on a 351W or 302 you have to use aftermarket pistons designed for the swap. The Windsor's have an inline valve arrangement and the 335 series of motors use a canted valve arrangement. Because of the difference in piston designs, stock measurements aren't going to do you much good.

Go to: http://www.kb-silvolite.com/page46.htm#SECT4
to see the differences. The first piston (part# KB151) is a stock configured flat top for the 351W, the ninth piston (part# KB110) is for use in a Windsor with stock length rods and Cleveland heads. Notice the difference in placement of the valve pockets.

These pages will give you compression heights but you'll have to contact KB-Silvolite to get the measurements between rings.

As for the other measurements, I'll see what I can do.

By the way, what are you using to draw your plans?

Thankyou,

I had a look at the site and it shows off what you were saying about the canterd valves really well. I am using a graphics ste to draw the plans,

Go to Amazon.com and order a book called "Building Ford Short-Track Power" It has complete engine specs, an assembly guide, and in the back they have actual drawings and blueprints of the block. I think they give enough info that you could get a hunk of steel and machine it into your own block if you wanted to
