Motor

You have a 351M (Modified, Midland, Mexican, blah blah blah). There's a very slim chance that somebody put a 351W in, replacing an I-6 or 302. If the water outlet (thermostat housing) is bolted on the end of the intake, then it's a Windsor. If it's on the top, then it's a Modified. As for timing....I would pick up a Chiltons or Haynes manual at your local auto parts store.

Best of luck to you and your son. The old Fords are the only way to ride.

The 351M thermostat housing goes on top of the block, not on top of the intake maifold. Also, there is difference in the fuel pump mounting bolts. The 'W' fuel pump bolts are mounted horizontally, and the 'M' bolts are mounted vertically.

it could have a 400 in it too. you can't tell the 351M and 400 apart from looking at the outside.
4th letter in VIN
S=400
H=351M
G=302
B=300 I6

preferred timing is 2° less than what it spark knocks at warmed up. back it off some if it starts slow.

-EDIT- You can make that little degree mark by holding down the ALT key and typing 248 on the numeric keypad. The ° will appear when you let up on the ALT key. -Admin

Factory timing is 8°-10° Before Top Dead Center. You will find that your timing chain is loose and you probably won't be able to set the timing exactly.

Is the accel pump working? with the ignition off look down the carb and open the throttle, you should see two streams of fuel hit the boosters.

the way i make the ˚ is hold ALT/ option key and press K.
-EDIT- unfortunately that does not always display a °, it displays a " or some other character. The ALT-K method only works in some programs. -Admin

Before you start screwing with the carb your bog could still be timing when you are doing it on a guess

Mine will do this as well if the timing is not quite right but it will idle and run like a charm otherwise . Good Luck to the young lad with his Ford Truck.

the bogging down could be from the choke staying closed for longer than it should, you can try adjusting the choke so it opens sooner.

Rip off that auto choke and do yourself a favor by putting on a manual choke. JMHO.
