I'm ready to pull the engine but i have a question on the process of doing so. I have the cab ready to lift right off the frame so i thought i'd jack up the cab to give me some room to get the tranny past the transmission lid in the cab. Is this a difficult thing to do, that is pulling the motor and tranny as one piece or should i split them up?
I'm not sure about where to attach the cherry picker either. I've heard that i can attach to the front and rear head bolts with some eye bolts is this also correct? I'm pretty happy with my oil pan being nice and straight so a chain around the entire assembly is out of the question. Let me know what you guys are doing to get the motor out cleanly and easily, i'll appreciate it.
JMO, unless you have some burning desire/reason to pull them together I think it would be easier to handle them seperately. Pull the engine out the top, drop the tranny out the bottom.
I was able to pull the engine/tranny out of my 84 F150 as an assembly, but I had the entire front clip off the truck... which made for tons of room to play. It would be easier if you separated them otherwise. As for where to hook the chain to pull it, I think IIRC I had used one of the bolt holes for the manifolds on the P.S. of the cylinder head and I can't remember which hole I used on the D.S.
I also have the front clip removed. separating might be easier now, once the assembly is removed i don't have a way to hold the transmission when splitting the cases. Hmmm... not sure though. I have a 4x4 w/manual TX. The whole problem with removing the cab is the tranny shifter neck that sticks up.
I took out what i think is all of the bolts connecting the tranny to the engine. It's only 5 bolts, half circle? How does the clutch lever come out? The bracket has 2 bolts holding it down, should i remove that and keep it all with the motor or is there another way?
When you take the bolts out of the bracket the shaft will split in two and there will be a stub about 2" long sticking out from the block. So it won't be in the way at all.
Got the engine stand finally, and a buddy of mine just dropped off the cherry picker. He told me to support the tranny in the front because once the engine is removed the tranny will tip forward. I didn't think it would be possible with both drive shafts in place and while it's still bolted to the cross member. What do you guys say? Support or not?
