Hey guys, I need some help. I have a customer with an 84 stepvan that has a 351 ford engine that came in not running. After determining that it wasn't getting any fuel, we put a new fuel pump on it, it started briefly but wouldn't start after that. Checked for fuel pressure, but getting none. When cranking with the line disconnected, nothing comes out. I used a vacuum gauge on the pump to see if the pump was sucking anything and nothing there either. On a hunch, I checked the old pump for vacuum and it had plenty. So now we are thinking that the eccentric on the cam is worn out. Any ideas? Right wrong or otherwise? If it is the eccentric, does anyone know where I can get one? I checked the dealer, said it comes in two pieces, said it showed available, but when he tried to order it, there were none available. Tried some of our local parts dealers (these guys can get almost anything), but they don't even have a listing for it. Can't get one from a salvage yard cuz they wouldn't disassemble a motor just for this cam.
go to some machine shops ask there... it's bolted on the front of the cam gear.. it's either two piece or one piece and you can't miss match them. do a search on goggle they are out there. you'll need to remove the timing cover to get to it...
If it is the eccentric it must be loose and if it is the cam gear is loose too... I would get a new bolt for it while your at it. ARP makes one look in jegs....
Thanks Hemieater. We got one machine shop in town and they didn't have anything. I new about removing the timing cover to change it, I also planned to change the timing chain at the same time. If we can't find this eccentric, our only alternative is an electric fuel pump. By your comments, I think we may need to tear the front cover off for inspection so we'll know for sure what we are looking at. Just trying to keep costs down for the customer. He doesn't have much money.
The 1p eccentric are everywhere and cheep, if your doing the gears and chain just get a 1P timming set and a new 1P eccentric, you will have to change the pin in the cam but the timing set come with it. Better than an elec pump... and yes I would pull the cover for sure...
Before you go to all that trouble, have you checked to see that the fuel is getting to the fuel pump? I wouldn't be surprised to find the tank pickup screen plugged.
I'm sure it could happen, but it's hard for me to imagine the eccentric wearing out without really buggering up the fuel pump arm and you didn't mention anything unusual there.
Yes, that is something we have concidered. However, like I mentioned before, I put a vacuum gauge on the inlet side of the pump, cranked it over, and no vacuum was created. After checking the old pump and getting vacuum, that leads us to believe that the eccentric is not working for whatever reason. Thanks for the response.
Unless you can see or feel that the eccentric is loose I'd think you're barking up the wrong tree. Like ^^^^ said I can't imagine how it would wear out enough to fail, it's a pretty stout hunk of steel.
