One, I previously posted that white stuff was forming inside the oil filler cap and my responses short of cracked heads/block was that this was fairly common with varying temps and short driving because the engine was drawing in moisture, summit racing also thought this was normal. I kept and eye on it and here is what happened, I drove it everyday and as soon as I returned as well as before I started it I would check the oil filler and would see no moisture in the morning yet small amounts of moisture very small if nothing at all in the evening and no white crap, I did this for a week then it started to rain and has done so for about 2-3 days now and when I checked the filler there was moisture and white stuff was forming. And the coolant has maintained it's cold level every morning I would check it. So my guess is it is not a cracked block but it is drawing in moisture is there any way of preventing this such as new gaskets etc.?
two, the other day I was driving it on a country road almost at idle and it sputtered somewhat for a short period of time, in the rain if that matters, and it did not do it again the filter is new as well as the carb and the filter had gas in it so was the dense/ humid air to blame for causeing it to be lean since I was driving it abnormally slow or is it possible to be moisture in the distributor as I have heard of this happening as it has on my wifes 95 4.9? Any repsonse appreciated thank you for your time
If you know someone that can do a leakdown test and a compression test that would tell you for sure what's going on. And yes, mositure in the distributor can cause the engine to sputter or stall. If your getting moisture in there while driving you might want to take the cap off and make sure it's not craked and the rubber seal is intact.
One thing to look at is the pvc system. If you don't have one it could be the reason why you are experiancing th moisture under the cap. Most people will have two sides they take on this issue. Personally I like to know that the crank case has a vacum on it. It reduses the oil leaks that can spring up. Also it does suck any blow by from the rings back through the intake. Pull out the valve in the top of the valve cover. It should move freely. The way I have mine set up is pvc valve is hooked up to the base of the carb and the other valve cover has a filtered breather element. Hope this might give you an area to start. As for the hesitation it could be moisture in the dist cap. Other then that I would have to be there or know a little more about the condition of the plug/coil wires.
Might sound silly but a friend of mine was getting water in his oil on his 72. The gasket between hood and cowl was bad and the gommet on his right valve cover where the hose fits in was gone. Rain would enter there.
