I have access (free) to a '64 289 that came out of a Galaxie. I plan to put it and the auto tranny in my 72 F100. Give me some suggestions to build the engine slightly more powerful than stock. By slightly, I mean a nice engine for cruising down the road (economical too) but enough growl to turn heads and enough power to spin some tires.
I'm thinking of new carb and intake, more sporty than stock cam, hotter ignition, ceramic coated headers, and flowmaster 40 series mufflers. If you guys have any good brands and specs (especially for the cam and carb), let me know.
Thanks...
Chris

Man does that bring back memories. My first truck was an F-100 with 3 on the tree.If you want to pep up that 289 put some after market heads on it.A new intake and cam with the stock heads won't get you much.At least have your stock heads ported. When picking your cam just remember even though you've got a truck and you want low rpm power, you really have to wind up the 289 to get power out of it.What gear ratio are you running?Putting some lower gears will hurt your fuel mileage, but it'll make the truck seem a lot peppier.
Cool! I am doing the same thing for my '62. Got a free 289 from a '64 Galaxie also, and had my excellent mechanic brother build it. Went with .030 over on the bore, 256H Comp Cam, stock small chamber heads with matched ports, screw in studs, roller rockers, flat top four barrel pistons, Weiand manifold, Edelbrock carb, Mustang shorty headers, and Pertronix ignition. Will back it with a C-4. Hoping for a nice cruising motor with a little extra oomph. Hope to post some pictures when I am done.
The truck came with a 3.70 gear. I replaced it with a 3.00 gear and got a few more miles per gallon and could still pull a car on a trailer with ease.
Just recently, I added new tires / rims (285-70r16) which were larger than the tires I had on it. This really reduced the low end so I will probably put the 3.70 gear back in it with the V-8.
I thought about putting new heads on it. I get a Summit racing catalog from time to time and they carry almost any 289 part you could want.
