.............I haven't been around here as long as most of the guys and gals on this forum but reps to me are a humbling thing. It lets me know that when I recieve a rep from someone it shows that they appreciated my advice or opinion or whatever was said. I agree that it is frustrating when you can't give reps to someone that deserves it because you gave them reps the day before or whenever, but I think that in the end if they really deserve it then they will get it.
From a guy that has been here less than a year, He knows what it is all about. My hats off to you for saying it right. Point to you when I get out from under my 24 hour timeout.
The deal that gets me is the guys you see with 10 little green boxes next to their name and when you check their posts nearly all of them are in General Discussion talking about scrapbooking and gardening and the best way to install carpet and on and on. No truck talk. No advice on mods or repairs of TRUCKS but plenty of advice on where to get the best page seperators for scrapbooks or grub worm killer for your garden.
If those guys have eight green boxes then the guys that talk diesel truck mods and repairs deserve twenty.
Ok, off my soap box now.
Scott, I agree 100% with this.
In all honesty though, the simplest solution would be to only display the rep points a person receives in the forum where they received them.
So a person with 10 little green boxes next to their name in the GD forums, won't have them displayed here with us 7.3 nuts.
This policy is much like most laws in our country... deemed necessary only to potentially minimize the impact of those who do things iresponsibly, unfairly, and/or inappropriately. However, as with our laws again, it is typically the "good guys" who abide by the rules and the "bad guys" find loopholes and ways to circumvent the situation anyway. Practically speaking, gone are the days where the code of "My word is my honor, and I will not violate it" is adeuqate without hard and fast policies, rules, and regs. We are therefore stuck with having these hard and fast rules and regs limit what the "good guys" can accomplish out of wise and fair judgement.

If you search a bit more, you will find several post where Dan (Kwik) said himself that is was not his design and gives credit to the other guy and that is why I no longer call it the Kwik filter. I have been here for a while myself and never heard Dan take credit for coming up with it. Just bringing it here. He didn't call it the Kwik Mod, we did.
I know, I know, thats partly why I picked that mod.... I meant absolutely no disrespect to Kwik... I just used it as an example...
I'm sorry I mentioned it, I knew it would open a can of worms and someone would take it the wrong way, thats why I said I didnt want to drag anyone thru the mud... I picked the Kwik filter as a simple example, and because Kwik's reputation is undisputable... I was sure people would see it for what it was and not turn it into a heated dipute....
that would be like saying GENE is illiterate, C'mon now!
As far as the rep points, I agree that rep points should stay in the forum they were issued and not tranfer out to other forums...
I guy can be a genius basket weaver and diesel dumb at the same time
I had to do it in a local political forum I setup a few years ago. I am glad I don't really deal with local politics anymore and that forum is long gone.
Wow, I didn't know rep was so important to so many people on this particular forum. I for one could really care less what the rep system is, it's not like it really means anything or has any value. Even here, rep is almost never awarded for good tech advice. I mostly try to give rep for good tech advice or for something that make me laugh.
The current limits on awarding rep was instituted because a certain regional chapter (who can no longer be named) got a rep ring going and it torqued other posters off that they were inflating each other's reputations.
Whatever, it doesn't matter to me, having those green squares doesn't make anyone smarter, wealthier, or better looking.

And I agree 100% with this as well.
If you were awarded a subscription for maintaining x-amount reps, that would be another story. As it stands, it's really nothing more than bragging rights i guess.
When I started reading all of you posts I was going to multi quote a few of you. As I got further along there were to many to do. All I can say is that in my opinion all of you are probably the greatest group of people (can't say guys we do have a few ladies present) that I have ever dealt with. The advice always flows freely and quickly. I am no diesel expert by far, but with what I have learned here and knowing that if I have a problem or get stuck while doing something on my truck, I can look to my FTE Family for guidence. If some people are so driven by the "green boxes" so be it. All I know is that I appreciate all of you and the know how that is shared here!
