hello guys, i have a question here. I have a 99 sd f250 4x4 with 157000 miles on it. i have put almost 40,000 on it myself. i need to know if its good to change just the fluid and filter or the whole thing as in the cooler and all. i have heard some bad stories about changing the whole fluid deal. i have never done it myself since i had the truck. it shifts good and all . i ahve a bully dog 6 position chip in it has well.the only thing i ever tow is a small camper 19ft hybird and thats it. thanks guys and sorry for the long write up ...perrie
Just used this method worked great....make sure you use torque wrench on pan bolts....I did it with out draining torque converter. Just run through gears....it doesn't mention hittin reverse for a bit but i did and definitley got old fluid discharge...

I just followed Mark's write-up doing the ATF change last week. Spread out a large plastic drop sheet and follow the instructions. I used a plastic milk jug marked off in quarts, set inside a 5 gallon pail, to keep track of fluid coming out. I over did it and wound up putting 22 quarts of new ATF through but it sure was clean coming out by the time I was done. I did it alone but a helper sure would be nice.

Sure it does.
6a. At least one time while the engine is running move the shifter through each position from P to 1, pausing about 5 seconds at each position. This will change some fluid that would otherwise be trapped in the valve body, accumulators, and clutches.
