so guys, here's the situation...i've got me an 81 f-150, see my signature for the rest, but my rear diff took a dump on me...well, i got it tore apart and turns out that the splines on the axles and on the side gears are stripped out. i've got 31 spline axles and i guess wat my question is if the side gears that spline on to my axles are replaceable and w/o buying a whole new rear end? and if so, how bad is it to change them out?
One thing great about the 9 in. You can take JUST the third member to a shop and have them replace your carrier, and they can set up the gears for you and everything else. (In other words you can hand carry it in and leave the rest of the truck at home.)
You should get a new set of axles, bearings and seals. Replace the parts and drive your truck for another 200,000 miles.
You are going to have to get every single piece of metal shaving out of the pumpkin anyway, so you might as well pull the diff and replace it with a new carrier (A limited slip would be better).
That is just my thoughts, your there, it needs work, do it up right and forget about it.
thanks man...i probably should have added that i'm planning on gearing it down when i someday put 35" tires on her to probably 4.11 and it's at 3:1 now, so i just wanna quick fix it to get it going...i've already got axles, seals, and bearings on my parts list now, but the last thing is the side gears, otherwise the rest of the carrier is pristine.
kool, thanks, u kinda read my mind there, when i do gear everything down, my plan was to put a locker it the rear (been kinda lookin at detroit already) and drop the front TBI for a D44 out of a 70's truck or bronco, would just rather have that solid front end under her, i'm sure most all u guys agree...
If its a Ford 9" limited slip you can get side gears from a open carrier and use them. You will have to grind the shoulder off the one that you put on the clutch pack side though.Take a grinder and cut as much off the gear as you safely can then find a machine shop to finish it up. I've done this more than a few times. It works fine and doesn't cost much.
