What is the easiest way to tell if I've got 28 or 31 splines? Do I have to pull the axle to find out? Would most any rear end behind a C6 probably be 31 spline?
Thanks,
Andrew

I'm pretty sure you have to pull the axle. Unless I'm mistaken (and that's not unusual), the shafts are the same all the way up to the splines or thereabouts. The 28 spline axles taper down right before the splines.
Pulling the axle isn't all that hard. Jack up one side, remove wheel, remove drum (hardest part), remove 4 nuts through the hole in the axle hub, and pull the axle out.
If the axles won't come out, put the drum on backwards and put the jugs on part way. Use the drum as a slide-hammer to tap the axle out. Putting tape on the exposed threads will keep you from damaging them, too.
I would guess that most limited slip 9"ers would have 31 splines, but not all. I have never seen a 28 spline LS rear but I'v never looked for one either. I've seen tons of open carrier 28 spline 9s though.
I had this same post last week, I just followed instructions and yanked it out. It wasn't much work. Just follow Kevin's instructions and you should do fine. The hardest part is taking the tire off.
BTW, mine was a 31 spline, but it is an open diff at the moment... (Hurry up, UPS!)
After posting my comment about not ever seeing a 28 spline trac-loc ford 9", I did a search on e-bay. There are several on there with 28 splines. They didn't say they were from a truck though.
I should have worded my post a little different. There are 28 spline 9" axles. Its just that most of the truck axles are 31 spline. Maybe the 1st Bronco's came in 28 spline. I am not sure. I could probably pull an axle out of our 79 T-bird and that may be 28 spline. But now that I think about it, why? That car has to weigh more than some trucks! Have you ever picked up a bumper on a 79 T-bird and then on a 79 truck. Many they weren't messing around back then! Sorry got off subject. My mind starts to wander sometimes.

Ok, I confess, my vehicle is a car. A 1975 Ford Elite. I did own a Ford truck when I joined this site though. I hope to buy a pickup from the same era soon.
Those Elites are nice when they are taken care of. My dad had one at one time. They were only made in 75 and 76. They share the same platform as the 77-79 T-birds but I have never checked the splines on the axle shaft. To be honest I do have an axle out of an Elite that is disassembled. If I could identify which axle shaft is which I suppose I may be able to clear up a couple of things. Maybe I'll go dig through the pile of axles a little later.
