Cps ----- Not?

I have a 2002 7.3L Turbo with 65,000 miles and recently when I drive it for awhile it will just die. After I let it sit for approxiamtely 30 minutes it will start up again and run for who knows how long. It does not seem to be affected by cold, hot, rain, or dry. It has died on me in all situations, and sometimes it will happen within a mile or two and then other times it will drive 20+... CPS has been changed and but it still died....

Please give me some ideas..

Where did you get your CPS from? Some after market ones have been known to fail right out of the box. There's also been a few problems reported with some of the new ones from Ford involved in the recall.

Do you get a SES light that stays on when the truck is running? Are there any other symptoms you can share with us?

When it dies is it like you turned the key off or is it like it ran out of fuel ?

The shop supplied the sensor...So I do not know yet....

I do not receive any "idiot" lights at all. It just truns off whenever it decides too. THe first time it started doing it was when I was driving in <30 degree weather and about 2.5 feet of snow. And coincidentally my steering pump went out due to the extreme "wheeling".....I did not have a clue at this time except that I might have got snow into the airbox or something... So the next morning I drove about 30 miles home and thought nothing of it.

The second time it happened I thought it ran out of diesel due to the fuel level the wife had left it at. And after a good 30 minutes of sitting (before receiving the fuel) it decided to start without hesitation. I thought it was odd that it would start so quickly "after running out of fuel" but I went ahead on my way when after a couple miles it did it again and again totalling 3 times in a 10 mile drive. Everytime it would need to sit for approximately 30 minutes. This evening was also cold and wet...

The last time it was warm and dry and would only go a mile or two when it would die... I got it to the shop and replaced the sensor and steering pump and thought all was good when after driving home it started happening again. Only this time it stalled at a stop sign and then almost immediately restarted(which was a first). So I decided to go drive for awhile and you know what I am going to say next.......$@*!&$@!!!

I have driven this truck about 4500 miles in the last 21 months..And the only work I have ever done in the last 4 years of owning it is change the oil, clean the aftermarket air filter, steering pump x2, and a pittman arm.. THe only other issue I have had is when pulling a load in extreme cold it seems to be starving for air or something... I can usually hear a winding up and a "pressure release" when I let off the throttle but in the 20's or colder it will not "release" and it seems to be lacking of power a touch...

Sorry for the novel but this my entire story involving the truck and hopefully it will help..Thanks to all in advance for any help provided.

Go to your local ford dealer and get a new Gray CPS for around 27.00 and put it in. Drive around and see if that is the problem. If not you will have a spare.

Let us know.

Do all your dash lights / gauges function normally when you have this no start condition? Does the glow plug light come on and go off like normal? Does the water in fuel light ever flash? Does the tach move while trying to crank (during no start)?

A spare CPS is not a bad idea.

I had a similair situation in that i had intermittent problems with the engine stalling and lossing all power, i pulled the DTCs which read a CPS failure, i then replaced the CPS with an expensive CPS from napa thinking id get what i paid for. The truck still missed and stalled and then i recieved the recall notice from ford and took the truck in . . . since then ive had no issues and no DTCs. turns out the CPS that the stores currently carry are simply the same factory replacement CPSs that ford has recalled, ford apparently has a better model which is provided under the recall. Give that a try

A spare CPS is not a bad idea.

All dash lights are normal.....And my mechanic said that the CPS came directly from Ford.

Crank vs. Cam

Is there actually a crankshaft sensor and a camshaft sensor?

Same thing. Any sensor you buy for whatever reason could be bad right out of the box.

Did you do the recall? If not bring it to any dealer and 20 mins, no charge you will have a new CPS installed.

Yes, but I am wondering if he could have changed the cranshaft sensor instead of the camshaft sensor....I could understand a mistake like that if so...lol

Is the Crankshaft for the Diesel or gas engine? The CPS says 7.3 in the discription.
