Idles rough

I have a 99 psd that i have sunk alot of money in and am getting no where fast. i just put swamp injectors in it and had to have one rebuilt cause they sent me a bad one causing it not to start when hot. in the mean time of finding that problem ive put hpop, cps, the fuel sensor under the fuel bowl, the sensor on the driver side head, a fuel pump. after i found the injector bad i had that rebuilt along with the other 7 tested and they are fine now. the problem im having now is that it wants to idle rough at about 1200 rpm when it gets warmed up and will not idel down unless i unplug the sensor on the driver side head then it will idle down but still rough. anyone have any ideas of what i should try next?

Welcome to FTE. Do you have a scan tool where you can monitor things?

Danny's having similar issues. I posted the rough idle chart in post #5 here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...d-problem.html

No i dont have a scan tool or even access to one either. all i have is a edge evelution programmer. i have been told i could be getting air in the system somehow. i have thought if im getting air in the system then i would have a leak or it would idle rough when cold also. when the truck is not running and the key on with the fuel pump running you can hear what sounds to be air around the fuel bowl. anyone ever hear of that?

no it sure dont. when i unplug that sensor on the driver side head it will throw a code of injector control pressure above below desired. and idle fairly decent. alot better than when its pluged in

Open your fuel bowl drain valve, turn the key on and see if your getting a stream of fuel or a foamy mess with bubbles. The fuel pump will make a whine noise, but it's located under the drivers seat on the frame rail. You shouldn't have any noises at the bowl. Since the fuel is pressurized I think you would notice a leak if there was a problem that was letting air in.

Maybe you should pull that sensor (ICP) and see if there is a bunch of oil on the back side of it. Maybe it's starting to go bad. Of course you really need to monitor ICP pressure and volts to check this.

its a stream of fuel until it hits the steering stabilizers. the other day i pulled it BACK into the garage after a test drive and noticed an big spot of oily film on the floor that wasnt there. i thought the rear main was out until i got underneath of it and it turned out to be fuel that had turned black. i guess this color came from dirt off of the engine? i couldnt tell where it was coming from so i cleaned up everything including the engine and then let it run again to try and find the leak but it didnt do it anymore. my first thought was the drain plugs in the back of the head but the wasnt wet or greasey.

Look in the valley of the engine (on top between the heads) the common fuel leak locations are at o-rings on the side of the bowl. Of course if you changed your filter recently you may have just spilled some fuel.

i figured thats what it was sence it didnt do that anymore. i have took the filter out and drained the fuel and had someone hit the key and i could watch it fill up but someone told me that fuel pumps that you get from napa are universal and sometimes dont carry enough pressure. i dont know that but i do know the fuel pump from napa makes ALOT more noise that the factory one. one thing that i forgot to mention was that i didnt have this idle porblem until i repalced the injectors, if that helps. when i got told i could be getting air in the system could it be a bad o rings on the oil drain plugs in the head. or could it just be the injectors. i got screwed out of 1600 bucks by swamps cuz i put 700 bucks in them after they sold them to me. i mean i have had them tested by columbus diesel and they said a few of them was border lined from not being in spec? i bought those injectors from a former friend who got them through swamps. does anyone know how to get ahold of them?

Swamps number is 615-793-5573. I don't know if maybe my ICP is going out or what not, but like someone else out here (I forgot?) I'm getting a rough idle too. It's not the shake the truck idle that made me change injectors, but it does funny stuff on the decel after getting on it, and I don't think it's been throwing codes (haven't checked in the past 2 days).... Sorry to hear you having all the problems. Let us know what happens!
