I am finally getting around to the 272 in my 56 and the ticking noise it started. I am no mechanic and no with back real bad--have even more problem.
I have a external oiling kit and want to install this week. I need to know when you run from oil sending unit to valve cover--how do you install the oil line and not cut a hole in valve cover?
Truck runs great and starts right up. I thought valves needed adjusted, but with the cover off----no oil is there. I spray some on and the tick goes away. I hope this works.
Not much help and I’m really guessing here, its been a long time since I have seen one of those, obviously no instructions, I THINK it had one or two brass fittings into and on the top of the valve covers.
I seem to remember my dad had an external oiler on a 292 and it went through the valve cover. I know thats not what you wanted to hear but I'm afraid its so. Kurt G. Y-blocks rule.
the y block gets very little oil to the top even when healthy. try some solvent type additive like marvels then run good oil and see if the oiling problem goes away
Do you have a pic of the kit you have? Some kits had a hollow bolt that replaces the valve cover bolt and feeds the rockers that way. Another type fed the rockers through the overflow tube and was routed under the valve cover in the back of the engine. I have made my own kit by brazing a tube in the cover that coresponds with where the overflow tube comes out of the rocker assembly. Installing the cover plugs the feed tube into the rockers and all you need to do is connect a metered oil supply to the tube brazed to the cover. If you need help contact me and I'll be glad to assist.

These kits were sold by autoparts stores, so you might check out some old independent parts stores in your area.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if an 'ol time Ford mechanic (we both know)...now residing in Ohio might just have some of these kits.
If you can't find one in Duncan Falls, I know a fellow who has some locally NOS.
Don't forget....there's big swap meet comin' up (another place to look).
If I remember correctly, there was a tool we used to use to help with the oiling. The rockers and shaft would be taken apart and cleaned, while rockers off we had a tool that would fit into the oil hole on the head. The tool was filled with grease so when you hit the tool with a hammer it would help clear out the passage. Oil would mix with the grease. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. On the kits, there was a hollowed out stud that went in to replace the rocker shaft/valve cover stud.

Thanks N.D. --I called JON and he will look and see if he has a set of instructions--i never even thought of him. I was to buy a coolant res.tank from him for avanti--and it was gold plated or something-haha--anyway I am using a ford tank--thanks again
I have a 1952 F-6 that has a valve top oiler. The line from the jar runs to the vaccum port at the intake. It's orig. definately circa 1950's, but I also see a site that makes them new and has lots of info.

I just got the directions faxed to me,and it looks like the line runs on top of the valve cover and you drill a hole on top. I will read more after dinner. I want to know if I can just run it to 1 valve cover? I don't need it on driver side. Please let me know....Bill

If you're not installing both sides NOW at least build it with a capped off "T" so you can do the Drivers Side later.
Penn Dick--why don't you drive over and show me how it's done!! haha!! That is good advice though!! With my luck the other side will start growning next!! LOL I hope summer get's here soon--bbrr!!! Bill
