About a month ago I was going to change the fluid in my 90 F150 4.9l/E4OD. I was talking to a transmission mechanic about this procedure and he suggested that if I wanted to firm up the shifts to use all Type F fluid or to use 8qts Type F and 8qts Mercon. I used 16qts Mercon and a bottle of Lubegard, but I was wondering if I had done what he suggested, would it have worked or would it have trashed my transmission???????????
IMO, you did the right thing. First off, a general rule is to NEVER mix types of fluid...foaming is usually the result. And with the aerated fluid, line pressures would drop even more than the factory intended.
Second, this ain't the old days where you could get away with using Type F in just about any make of transmission. There are additives in the newer fluids that complement the clutches and band lining materials that F doesn't have.
Third, I wouldn't wanna go around experimenting on an early E4OD trans. They tended to be problematic until an upgrading in '95 or '96 (I believe the latter, but I've been known to be wrong).
PatsPOS couldn't be more correct. Mixing fluids = bad times. Been there, done that. Personally, I wouldn't take my automotive questions back to that person unless they offer a free replacement guarantee. :-) As for type F, don't use it in your transmission. The additives in Mercon help keep your newer transmission running great. If you want to firm up your shifts, do it he right way and install a shift kit. Transgo makes a decent kit (just installed one in my AOD) and they are EASY to install. If I can do it, anyone that knows which direction to turn a wrench can do it.
