v10 towing my 6670# dry camper

well i moved my camper today. this 2005 f350 v10 sc 4x4 with 4.10s. tows awesome. iv only had the truck for about 4 weeks. and i towed my camper which is 6670 dry and 30' and the camper is loaded with everything. but no water or food. only 40 miles though. anyway. this truck didnt even crack a sweat. tranny temp didnt move either. it was turning 2100 rpm@ 60mph.and the truck never went more than 3100rpm and that was only once. going up a hill from a stop . i dont have much towing experence so i took it easy. and the built in trailer brake is very smooth also. the only other trailer i have towed was a 24' coachman tt. and that was with a 95 f150 5.8 sc 4x4 lb and that camper was only 4000#. and i didnt like towing that much with it. i love this v10

I think you will find that is a great rig to tow with. It's darn near as good as a diesel and the cost of gas is a heck of a lot better than diesel. Its about $0.68 a gallon less for gas in our area right now. I have a buddy that bought the V10 and that thing stock will out pull, barely, my 460 that has had a lot of major mods. He was undecided as to whether he made a mistake purchasing the V10 over the diesel. Now he is sure he didn't make a mistake. I hope you enjoy many miles of towing in the future.

I think you will find that you are just starting to find the limits of our V10.

I have a old 2V with 4.30s and we gross at 23500 lbs, the trailer alone is 15800 lbs.

We just purchased on new trailer, loaded up in the 9500lb range...the V10 pulls it as well as our old trailer that weighed in at 7500lbs.

The V10 won't pull the hills as well as the diesel, but it won't hold traffic up either.

Great Engine!

You may have to take the hill a little slower, but you wont be paying 60 to 80 cents per gallon more to do it.

i have a 5.4 not a v10 but i can imagine what an exta 100hp would be like. that v10 should flat run with that weight. time to get a bigger camper.

I just bought a 99 F350 with V10, 3.73 gears. I am pulling 30ft TT that weighs about 9000 lbs loaded. I just got home from a 450 mile trip that averaged about 9 mpg. I have never had a V10 so some of my concerns may be unfounded. I pulled with O.D. Off because it kept kicking out when i tried to maintain 65 mph. I ran at 60 mph because the RPM's would get above 2500 if I tried to go faster. 65 MPH would take the RPM's to the 2800 RPM range. Question: Is operating at 2800 RPM hurtful?

I wouldn't think 2800 rpms would do any more real wear than 2500. Maybe require service a couple weeks earlier than normal. lol.

Different animal altogether, but still a pushrod V motor, My 4.0 OHV hums along nicely at 28-3000 rpms towing out of OD.

I wouldn't be worried about letting that engine sit a 3000 rpm's all day long...that engines quite happy to sit there, it gets good torque and isn't labouring at all.

Had a 99 350 V10 3.73's with a 5 speed manual. Always keep it in 4th gear towing. Found I use to have to keep it about 2750rpms for best towing. On hills I would drop it to 3rd and run 4,000 rpms at 55mpg. This was towing 16k too! Ran synthetic oil from the day it was new and pushed the heck out of that motor. Coming up the hills in the Poconos I would keep it on the floor in 3rd gear about 3800 rpms and it never missed a beat. I pushed that motor beyond what it was geared for. Towed heavy with it for 6 years. Just once coming up a real steep long hill into Lebanon Valley Ma. had it in 2nd gear at 4,200 prms almost on the floor and it did crab a little about that. Was always a Chevy person, and didn't like the V10 at first. But after towing with it for several years it proved its self. Great motor! Planning on upgrading to an 18-19k 5ver, that is why the 450 now. To answer your question this motor loves 2800 to 3500 rpms. Averaged about 7.5 on the computer towing.

We have an 8K travel trailer and the truck acts like it really isn't even there. As for Deisels beeting us up the hill - not really! Most times I'm rolling by them. It's a darn fine engine / vehicle combo, especially for those of us that don't tow full time / like easy maintenance.

Rolling by diesels on the hills? What were they towing 10k more pounds than you? I sometimes take it easy on my diesel truck and others have passed me, probably people like you thinking "whoa I am outrunning that diesel" Not everybody races up hills! I guarantee you cannot out perform a diesel truck with similar weights towing up a 6% grade hill! I can run all day long at 70-80 on 6% grades if I wanted too! I have flown up hills but I take it easy and run 65 on the hills most of the time....Towing 11k toy haulers at 80mph starts to get a little sketchy, not the safest thing to do....

Would agree with Scottman20. Read an article that the v10 towing 10k with 4.30s will do as well at the big 3 diesels with 3.73s towing. I would tow up to 14k with a V10. No doubt 8K will tow as fast as a diesel. 16k is a different story. Coming up the hills in the Poconos with my 450 4.30's I could tow at any speed I wanted. I usually let off a little to 62mph so it would not downshift to conserve fuel. Like Scottman said 70mph I blew a trailer tire getting up speed for the next hill. Smoke, tire pieces flying and cars swerving was not a pretty sight. It will sure give you white knukles.
