The owners manual for my 87 tells me: "Caution, the tailgate load should not exceed 500 pounds (i would'nt trust it for that much)
When heavy cargo is to be loaded it is recommended that the TG be removed."
The Ranger has cable TG supports. My 68 F-100 had stamped steel supports which I'm sure were much stronger.
