So I was thinking today(yeah,I know scary)...Anyways,I was wondering if anyone knew or if anyone has a Ford pick up with a 300 I6 with a plow on it.
I know that the 300 has a lot of torque for pulling, but I don't know about pushing.I mean it probably depends a lot on the tranny as well but would a 300 really have enough power to push a decent size plow?Different gears would probably make a difference too.
I'm not talking like a big V-plow of anything that big,just a decent plow.I got a 1986 F-150 regular cab long box 4x4.It has a 4 speed tranny and a 300 I6.
I also plan to put larger tires(like 35 inch) on my truck.Do you think this would effect the pushing power of the truck as well?
I have 35's on my 77 F150 and it has a 300 in it. I have 3.50 gears in it and I have no problem with them. I would HIGHLY suggest that if you are going to run 35's and use a plow to go down to a 4.10 or 4.56 gear.
I wouldn't go with 35's. Go with old style snow tires, like an 8.0x16" Cargo Trac with studs, but I wouldn't use an F150 for plowing anyways- they have a much thinner frame than the F250 and F350, and not as stout of drivetrain components.
Well, thanks a lot I was just wondering if you could do it.If i do go to 35's I'll be putting in different gears in the rear and front end.I'm probably gonna be getting them from Bronco Graveyard.
Haha Ford_Six...I like your signature. My names Jared...it's even spelled the same.
Personally i would run stock sized tires on a plow truck especially if its a half ton my buddy had an 80s 150 with a plow and 32s rubbed whenever the plow was up. That 300 likes to be worked the rest is up to the truck itself.
The truck should have the same power for pushing as it has for pulling. The only difference will be how much traction you can get. You would be in trouble trying to plow with a 2 wheel drive because all the weight of the plow on the front will take weight of the back. If you have 4x4 it shouldn't be a problem.
The 300 should be a great plowing engine because of its great low end torque. It shouldn't have any problem pushing some snow.
my neighbor uses an 84 F-150 w/ 300 that he picked up for $500 to plow a local area, it does okay. He doesn't particularly care about the truck, since it was just to get him by until he got his main truck fixed, but from what I saw, it did decent.
