snow plows

I had an interesting conversation with dear wife the other day about our plow truck. Currently I'm using a clapped out 83k20 with a clapped out Western Cable operated plow. I just do our place, but there is quite a bit of snow to move. The truck works, and ALWAYS starts. the plow works ... mostly ... most of the time, even if it takes some coaxing to get it to cycle left and right.

Anyway, we were talking about the truck and how both kids wanted to ride along while plowing and I was surprised that all three of us fit, but I kept bumping my son when I had to lift the plow ect. I mentioned, rather off hand, that my perfect plow rig would actually be the expedition. she raised an eyebrow, but I explained that it is shorter than the pickup, turns tight, the 4wd works great and it has a ton more power than the clapped out 350. (not that I really need more power when plowing ... the -- guessing -- 98 horsepower that's left in the motor seems to get along fine).

So what I was thinking is: rather than trade it in for $500 when I'm done with it in a couple years (200k+ miles), I could sell the plow truck as a unit and put that money toward a decent plow for the expedition.

So, really, I guess the question is, what should I look for?

My thinking is that anything mounted on the equivalent year F150 should work great. I don't really care how heavy it is, since it will only be a farm truck at that point and if I wear it out or break it, so be it.

what years of F150 would I look at for mounts. I'm sure whatever I buy will be (well) used, but what platforms are compatible?

Any other thoughts in general?

this is a couple of years down the road, and assumes, of course, that I don't blow it up pulling our travel trailer

The Boss plow website should list a mounting kit for your Expedition. Cross reference that to similar F150s, and you'll probably find the application parts are the same.

There are several older Expeditions running around with (mostly) Boss plows here.

FYI, the Expedition is equivalent to a 1/2 ton pickup as far as structure goes, the manufacturer does not endorse plowing with it. Because of this and to the best of my knowledge, there are no plow setups designed for the Expedition.

Wrong.

Boss lists kit STB10321C, coupler unit & SmartHitch for 7', 7'6" HTX/Sport Duty straight blade plows for the 2006 Expedition on their web catalog.

I'm sure Western has a similar package.

F150, k1500, and the 1500 Ram pickups are all commonly set up for plow duty here, and 300 inches of snow is not uncommon. Tahoe, Suburban, Expeditions, Tacoma, Rangers, and Colorado are also common.

Commercial plows here are normally heavier duty rigs, but many people make do with the lighter duty rigs.

Is it endorsed by the manufacturers? That's another question, although last I looked, as of a couple of years ago, the F150 (5.0 only) and K1500 had factory plow prep packages

In plow my own drive with a 29 year old Chevy short bed K1500 and haven't had a plow related failure in all that time, except for a couple of brake lines, two fan clutches and a few batteries.

We don't all need an Oshkosh or Walter Snow Fighter to clear our driveways.

All you need is the Snowbinester, a Dominator Combine turned plow by Top Gear. See it on YouTube, hilarity happens
