snow plows
Anyway, we were talking about the truck and how both kids wanted to ride along while plowing and I was surprised that all three of us fit, but I kept bumping my son when I had to lift the plow ect. I mentioned, rather off hand, that my perfect plow rig would actually be the expedition. she raised an eyebrow, but I explained that it is shorter than the pickup, turns tight, the 4wd works great and it has a ton more power than the clapped out 350. (not that I really need more power when plowing ... the -- guessing -- 98 horsepower that's left in the motor seems to get along fine).
So what I was thinking is: rather than trade it in for $500 when I'm done with it in a couple years (200k+ miles), I could sell the plow truck as a unit and put that money toward a decent plow for the expedition.
So, really, I guess the question is, what should I look for?
My thinking is that anything mounted on the equivalent year F150 should work great. I don't really care how heavy it is, since it will only be a farm truck at that point and if I wear it out or break it, so be it.
what years of F150 would I look at for mounts. I'm sure whatever I buy will be (well) used, but what platforms are compatible?
Any other thoughts in general?
this is a couple of years down the road, and assumes, of course, that I don't blow it up pulling our travel trailer
There are several older Expeditions running around with (mostly) Boss plows here.
Boss lists kit STB10321C, coupler unit & SmartHitch for 7', 7'6" HTX/Sport Duty straight blade plows for the 2006 Expedition on their web catalog.
I'm sure Western has a similar package.
F150, k1500, and the 1500 Ram pickups are all commonly set up for plow duty here, and 300 inches of snow is not uncommon. Tahoe, Suburban, Expeditions, Tacoma, Rangers, and Colorado are also common.
Commercial plows here are normally heavier duty rigs, but many people make do with the lighter duty rigs.
Is it endorsed by the manufacturers? That's another question, although last I looked, as of a couple of years ago, the F150 (5.0 only) and K1500 had factory plow prep packages
In plow my own drive with a 29 year old Chevy short bed K1500 and haven't had a plow related failure in all that time, except for a couple of brake lines, two fan clutches and a few batteries.
We don't all need an Oshkosh or Walter Snow Fighter to clear our driveways.
