351W or 351M

In 1979 could you get a 351W in an F-250? I've been on the 351M/400 forum and it sounds to me like you couldn't. Also what is the easiest way to tell a 351W from a 351M?

in my 1978 manual the 351W was optional in the E-150 - E-350 and the 351M was standard in the broncos and optional in the f-100 to f-350

Count the valve cover bolts. The 351W has 6, same as a 302. The 351M has 8.

I recently bought motor mounts for my 351w that I put IN a 79 4x4 chassis that CAME with a 351m. When they went to look up mounts they showed it as also being avalable with a 302, which is the same mount as a 351w. I have a 79 light truck shop manual though, and it does not show a 302 as being available. The guy at the parts store said it WAS in Mexico. Go figure ??

Also the 289-351W have an aluminum timing cover. Where the M's don't.

The "M" is also a bigger engine. Think Cleveland with different heads.

If you look at the engine, the first clue will be to look at the way the Radiator hooks up. In the 302/351w series engines, the Radiator hose will attack to the Intake manifold and disperse to the engine that way, If it is a cleaveland style motor(351c, 351m/400) The raditator hose will go directly to the block. This is the surest way to tell. Also, if the valve covers are stock, like said before, the cleaveland engines have 8 bolts while the windsor style has 6. The valve covers for the Cleavelands are also a bit taller for the valve clearence. I hope this helps.

The Winsor block has a removable timing chain housing behind the water pump. On the 351C/351M/400 block the timing chain housing is cast as part of the block.
The 351M is a 400 block with different crank and pistons.
