ok so heres the scoop, i have an 86 bronco w/ a remain 5.8w with with less than 30k on paper. when i bought the truck it was running extremely rich at idle, and misfired. did tune up took care of misfire but still running rich. truck had the original carb so i swapped it with a new 650 cfm w/ vac sec. didnt help one bit. that was almost two years ago. i am yet to find to this problem. idle mix screws stall the motor when turned in so power valve out of the question. tried adjusting sec. throttle so that primaries show less of the transfer slots. it just seems that nothing i do helps, and if someone on this forum can help it would be greatly appreciated because i love to drive this truck with my family but idling kills us. thanks in advance.
I have a few things in mind that might be causing this: whenever my truck has had a rough idle, I first check for vacuum leaks. Over time, rubber vacuum hoses and caps wear out and develop cracks or splits. Sometimes I've found those by spraying starter fulid around the suspected areas and if the engine revved higher, I know I've found the leak. So check your hoses and if there are unplugged ports. Another issue could be carb related: jetting. I learned the hard way that if the jets were to large or small, the truck idled like crap. All I had to do was remove the fuel bowl and try larger jets, run it, and increase/decrease the jet size until I was happy. You can get a nice jet kit through summit racing so you may want to consider that. By the way, how does your truck run while you're cruising? Is the problem present only at idle?
it idles smooth as can be but my only problem is that it is so rich at an idle. at a cruise she runs great no problems. as for the vacuum leaks i just put on a new stealth intake with new gaskets and made sure that there was no vacuum lines except for the vacuum advance to eliminate vacuum leaks as a possibility. i dont want to get into jetting because the problem is only at idle. but thanks for the suggestions!
Is it a new carb or used? I have found the do hickies go thru the
watcha macalits. Seriously I had a problem with the shaft bushings wearing out causing a slite leak.
