The difference would be that that 68 302 most likely has the standard style Windsor heads, the Boss engines were basically the same as a Clevor..Windsor (302 & 351) block with Cleaveland heads and a special intake manifold.

Chances are, the guy is blowing smoke up your butt. The term Boss gets thrown around pretty loosly by people trying to impress people who don't know any better. The true Boss 302 was a very limited production, high revving engine that only came in the Boss Mustang and the Eliminator Cougar. I think in only 69 and 70. It was a 4 bolt main 302, with special crank rods and pistons. It was capped off with 351 Cleveland style heads, with huge valves, and a special intake manifold. They ran like crap down low, and would load up if driven too slow. Get the RPM's going though, and they would scream. They were used in the old Trans Am races against the Chevy Z28 with the 302. Just look at the valve covers on it. If they look like a 302, then it's not a Boss. Check out the freeze plugs on the side of the engine. If they are regular freeze plugs, it's not a Boss. The Boss had screw in freeze plugs with a square hole in the middle of them. There are several other ways to tell, but you have to know what you're looking for.

Yes, this is true. Those 302 boss were nice engines, but you really had to spin them up to get them to do what they were truly capable of. The cleaveland style heads have 8 Valve cover bolts and are more Square shaped. The windsor style heads on a standard 302 have only 6 valve cover bolts and are more trapezoid shaped. Also if the valve covers just happened to be off (good luck) the Cleaveland style heads are canted type. So I hope this all helps you out. The 302 boss is a pretty rare engine in my experiences, but it very well could be one.
